This was a delicious bottle with lots of great savory character. Didn't necessarily have the tension that I'm fond of, but the flavors were on point. Not much toasty, doughy, notes, but lots of great lemons, apples, peaches all with a hint of salinity.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Morey St. Denis 1er Cru
A lot to like here already. At first the nose was very woodsy and gassy. 2.5 hours in the decanter really helped flesh out the underbrush, cherry, and cranberry flavors. Much like Adrian, this is right in my wheelhouse...tons of clear, cool red fruit...whiffs of dried floral notes, and pungent earthy undertones. Balanced from start to finish.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Latricières-Chambertin Grand Cru
Picked a bad day to open this bottle me thinks. Had about 2 hours of decanting when it needed 5-6. Color was a bit odd too with heavy bricking and a distinct brownish hue to the whole thing. Aromatics didn't offer much throughout the night, but at times a meaty note came forward. The palate was stern, tense and dark. This needed a lot more time either in the decanter or the cellar...and sadly, I don't have any more of these lying around!
This was drinking perfectly! The tropical fruits were popping, and there was a lot of savory notes to this too. Great acidity still kept this fresh and irresistible!
I don't get to drink d'Yquem a lot, so this was a real treat. Such a young and powerful wine at this point, drinking it alongside a 1970 Coutet was fascinating. The coconutty, pineappley, aromatics on this wine made me think about being on the beach in the Caribbean somewhere...all I needed was some sunscreen. The acidity seemed to be somewhat muted so the intense tropical fruits had a field day. Lots and lots of tropical fruits here...
I enjoyed this far more than the bottle I had 4 months ago. The powerful lychee flavors were all still there, but this seemed more balanced and tense. This was firing on all cylinders and was a pure delight. Selbach remains close to the top of my list of favorite Mosel producers.
