Introduction

Domaine hosted a sit-down tasting with Florent Baumard of Domaine des Baumard. It was a great chance to get to know one of the big names of the Loire. All in all, I was not too thrilled with the Savennières wines, as for the most part, they seemed to lack acidity and were all big wines without any of the raciness that I like in my chenin blanc. On the other hand, the Quarts de Chaume sweeties must be some of the best values in brand name sweet wines out on the market right now. The 2008 Quarts de Chaume was eye-opening.

Flight 1 (11 Notes)

  • NV Domaine des Baumard Crémant de Loire Carte Turquoise 88 Points

France, Loire Valley, Crémant de Loire

Disgorged last year. An assemblage of 30% chenin blanc, 10% chardonnay, and 60% cabernet franc. This has a Japanese muscat gummy candy nose with all its grapeyness. It's slightly bitter on the back end with some almond notes. Very refreshing and clean, with fresh acidity.

  • 2010 Domaine des Baumard Savennières 83 Points

    France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Savennières

Very high on the sulphur. Extremely rich and heavy, with some citrus and limestone flavours on the palate. A bit of mineral, but this still comes off as extremely heavy. I don't find any of the steely acidity that I like in my Loire wines. I could easily mistake this for a Rhone white.

  • 2010 Domaine des Baumard Savennières Trie Spéciale 85 Points

    France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Savennières

This is slightly sweeter and richer than the regular Savennières. There's a dominance of spice and honey, both on the nose and palate. The texture is much thicker, and this wine has much more gravitas. The alcohol is also handled a lot better in this cuvée thanks to the richness. However, this still doesn't have the acidity to hold everything together, and a few small sips is all I can manage of this wine.

  • 2009 Domaine des Baumard Savennières Clos du Papillon 85 Points

    France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Savennières

A big whiff of sulphur here. Mint and lime on the nose. This is again a bit low in its acidity, but much more pure in its minerality than the straight Savennières tasted previously. This has an oily texture, and comes off quite hot on the finish.

  • 2006 Domaine des Baumard Savennières Clos du Papillon 90 Points

    France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Savennières

Florent mentioned that this was a much more classic vintage of this wine, and I'm inclined to agree. This one is a fair bit racier than the '09, and I appreciate the acidity here. A nice herbal/green character shows through on the palate as well. This wine isn't just about richness, but is relatively fleet-footed. Love the freshness on this one.

  • 2010 Domaine des Baumard Anjou Logis de la Giraudière 90 Points

    France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Anjou

3-5% cabernet sauvignon, depending on the vintage. This is what Loire reds are all about. Tons of fresh and juicy red fruit on the nose, with a prominent green pepper note as a counterbalance. The palate still has a bit of that "new wine taste" that you get in really young wines. Light on the tannins, but plenty of fruity, juicy acidity. Excellent! As Florent said, "this is kind of wine that you can drink with lunch, but doesn't prevent you from going back to work afterwards."

  • 2003 Domaine des Baumard Coteaux du Layon Cuvée Le Paon 85 Points

France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Coteaux du Layon

Rich and sweet, with coconut the dominant characteristic on the nose and palate. There's a slight bit of dried fig and nutty character, as well as some of the caramelized pineapple you might find in an upside-down cake. Sadly, the acidity's a bit low on this one. I'd love for this to have more acidic grip.

  • 2008 Domaine des Baumard Quarts de Chaume 95 Points

France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Quarts de Chaume

Wow. Insanely spicy nose that burns your nose hairs. It feels a bit like the '10 Donnhoff TBA (but dialed down). Lots of tension between the spice and sweetness and acidity. Lots of pineapple and tart peaches. There's plenty of acidity here, and a finish that just goes on and on. Phenomenal stuff.

  • 2007 Domaine des Baumard Quarts de Chaume 93 Points

France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Quarts de Chaume

The nose on this one had a very strong black tea component, but a bit less of the fruit and spice on the '08. This is also sweeter and less acidic than the '08. A bit dialed down, this doesn't have quite the same freshness, but shows off its botrytis much more prominently.

  • 2002 Domaine des Baumard Quarts de Chaume 90 Points

France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Quarts de Chaume

There's a bit of malt on the nose of this one, along with some mushroomy funk. The palate is still quite sweet and fruity, but the back end shows a bit of dried shiitake mushroom, which I commonly associate with oxidized wines. There's acidity, but the freshness has long since passed into history. Perhaps in an awkward phase, this needs more time to develop more secondary and tertiary characteristics.

  • 2003 Domaine des Baumard Quarts de Chaume 88 Points

France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Quarts de Chaume

The palate on the '03 is much sweeter than the '02, and lacks the acidity that the other vintages have. The nose was somewhat muted here. Unfortunately, the palate is quite disjointed with the sweetness showing on the attack and alcohol showing on the finish. You can identify a pretty stewed characteristic in this wine. On the other hand, it's not like this wine is over the top or stupid in its imbalance: this is a well-made wine in a difficult year.
