Introduction

Just the five of us for a perfect Saturday dinner to celebrate Shane's birthday....... the food and the service were brilliant; it's easy to fall in love with Bombana's restaurant every time despite the entrance fee.

Flight 1 (1 Note)

  • 2002 Pol Roger Champagne Blanc de Blancs 94 Points

    France, Champagne

Just so good.... so accessible. Scrumptious. The perfect aperitif before heading to a 3-star Michelin restaurant. If I was an English Lord of a Manor and owned a stately home, this is the Champagne I would have as my 'house wine'. Brilliant value compared to other 2002s.

  • 1985 Joseph Drouhin Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Mouches Rouge 97 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru

Special recent release from the family cellar, labelled "Collection Privee de la Famille Drouhin, Sortie de cave en Juin 2012". Transparent but rich jeweled ruby red colour. Nose is OMFG...... floating chiffonesque perfection... cow sheds in the Swiss alps and an acquarium tank mix of slightly fishy and pond water plants. Palate is fabulous fresh fruit. Perfect classic rounded perfumed lightness but weight.... so hard to describe the weight but finesse. Absolutely frigging marvelous. Heady long resonance but again all power and no weight. Fantastic. So fresh and alive. My wine of the year thus far. So pleased that I have one bottle left. This blew everyone away and was everyone's wine of the night.

  • 1990 Château Lynch-Bages 95 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Still a touch of purple, translucent just about. Nose is sweaty, damp saddle, sweaty horse, wet ferns and lots of sous bois. Palate is beautiful poised and harmonic integration of white mushroom , bramble fruit, autumn mists in an oak forest....stunning. Quite belly-filling. Still a puppy. Lacked the finesse of the preceding 1985 Burgundy. But a real treat and it showed brilliantly tonight, although I still prefer the 1989. Interestingly, this got totally and unanimously blown out of the water by the Ch. Montrose 1990 we drank the following evening in the same company.

  • 2007 Còlpetrone Montefalco Sagrantino Passito 85 Points

    Italy, Umbria, Montefalco, Montefalco Sagrantino

Total opaque black-red bulls blood colour. Nose is almost cheesy in a rich Comtes way. Clings to the glass...thick and unctuous. Palate is very tannic: grape skins and strong cold tea with no sugar. It's as if they kept the red grape skins and threw everything else away. 85 for curiosity value as long as you drink no more than half a glass (otherwise you will be in serious hangover territory) or a lot more if you like this kind of thing.
