Introduction

we gather 6 wine lovers: Arnoldo, Yoram, Avihu, Maurice, Yoav G & myself

Flight 1 (4 Notes)

  • 2001 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape 82 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

blend of 30% Grenache, 30% Mourvedre, 10% Syrah, 10% Counoise, and the balance split among the other permitted varietals of the appellation.
double decanted to an empty bottle, sediments removal and back to original bottle. consumption less than an hour later.

    ruby/purple-colored
unfortunately not a a classic Beaucastel bouquet of new saddle leather, cigar smoke, roasted herbs, black truffles, underbrush, and blackberry & cherry fruit as we all expected, but some unpleasant odors & flavors. second time that this wine doesn't perform. did I buy a flawed 6-case?
On the following day it was less bad, but still....

  • 2003 Domaine du Pégau Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Réservée 94 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

double decanted to an empty bottle, sediments removal and back to original bottle. consumption an hour later.
    dark red-purple color.
rustic nose with a pleasant mix of funk, leather, barnyard, kirsch, and a prominent garrigue note followed by a smoke
palate has good intensity, powerful, full bodied, dark berries, vibrant, concentrated, fig paste, licorice, spiced, meaty, pepper.
the roast meat and spice stand out on the long finish.
this was a truly impressive wine and the best of the evening.

  • 2000 Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape 86 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

double decanted to an empty bottle, sediments removal and back to original bottle. consumption 90 min later.

    this was somewhat disappointing
nose was funky with some unpleasant Brett.
in the mouth, bitter raisin-like, flat, lacks complexity, this wasn't a great bottle.

  • 2005 Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape 91 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

double decanted to an empty bottle, sediments removal and back to original bottle. consumption 2 hours later.

opened with great anticipation but was a little disappointed as it was still a tight and closed. did not have the body, complexity or lingering aftertaste I expected. improved a bit after another hour but still below expectations.

Closing

This is how I rate the wines we tasted:

excellent/almost outstanding - 2003 Pegau (mainly at the beginning; its cork was 2/3 wet and at worst condition)
--
good plus - 2005 Clos de Pape (improved with time)
--
good minus - 2000 Clos de Pape (improved a bit with time)
--
--
mediocre - 2001 Beaucastel (improved a bit this morning to average)

but the main fact we all enjoyed the company and a nice evening - so this is what we'll remember.
