France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Darker core with lighter ruby rim; dense, chocolaty, date, Grenache, meaty, mesquite, cooked red fruit, bitter finish, tobacco, blackberry, hard on finish, grainy tannin; bottle really not given enough airtime which made this showing less than stellar- a little ticked off.
Dark core with bricking; cigar, new oak, lush, green pepper, cedar, not yet delineated; cherry, currant, great fruit on the palate, ripe, lush, loamy, slight medicinal, spice, grip but not too tannic; good; thought this was younger Pomerol.
Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
See through dull crimson with orange rim; aged, soy, dried cherry, yeast, fennel; dried red fruit on the palate, alcohol, volatility, caramel, medicinal, aged but palate got better with each taste; was this bottle prematurely aged?
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin
Pale, very dull ruby with light rim; lush, oaky, charred oak, cola, light cherry, dense; purple fruit, plum, dark cherry, dark raspberry, oak lingers, vanilla is strong; overall assessment Burg-like but seemingly too manipulated, lower acid, sweet; it was Burg (one that I'd liked in the past) but found the characteristics in this bottle slightly off-putting.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru
Very pale ruby with light rim, see through; griotte cherry, tang, raspberry, very true (especially compared to the last bottle), perfumed, watermelon, very floral; great acid, limestone; lean but tasty now.
Very dark, opaque, sediment, thin brick rim; molasses, autumnal, dark fruit, dark cherry, plum, spice; ripe palate, aged fruit, some dried, sun-dried tomatoes, tar, weedy cedar, ferocious tannin; not aging as gracefully as one would hope.
Opaque core with thin garnet rim; tar, dark fruit, graham cracker, seems soft but it sucks all of the moisture out of the mouth, sand blasting of the gums, volcanic, good fruit, younger, dark chocolate, cherry liqueur; not my style but I can appreciate the power.
Dark core, opaque, thin bricking; dill, bay leaf, perfumed, vanilla, green pepper, currant, cassis, violet, density, stewed red and dark fruit, tart, sweet tannin, low acid, cedar, spicy, high alcohol, spice, cassis, hedonistic; Heidi.
Semi-translucent, dark core with garnet rim; spicy red currant, cherry, green pepper, tobacco, soft tannin, some alcohol on the finish; simple compared to most at tasting tonight; ok.
Very dark core with thin garnet rim; smoky, cassis, pepper, green pepper, anise, black licorice, blackberry, cobwebs?; still hard on the palate, fruit is in line with the non-fruit descriptors; good.
