Flight 2 (4 Notes)

  • 1971 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Richebourg 95 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Richebourg Grand Cru

This started out a little subdued and slightly funky, but over a couple hours kept getting better. My last sip was the best. Once it opened, elegant red fruit, dried roses, spice and a potpourri of other nuances on the nose. Fresh and lively on the palate with nice energy and grip on the finish. The complex delicacy of this wine was quite an intellectual experience.

  • 1971 Domaine Robert Arnoux / Arnoux-Lachaux Romanée St. Vivant 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Romanée St. Vivant Grand Cru

Quite musty compared to the DRC, but improved after about an hour with soft fruit, though darker than the DRC. A bit of spice, but more damp earth and mushroom notes. More creamy with less grip on the finish.

  • 1969 Faiveley Chambertin-Clos de Bèze 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru

Dark fruit, mushroom with a touch of spice on the nose. This carried through to the palate which was soft and elegant. Perfectly integrated with a nice sweetness. More spice and great detail. I really enjoyed this but it was missing an element of excitement I found in the other wines tonight.

  • 1976 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Chambertin-Clos de Bèze 95 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru

Wonderfully forward nose of red and black fruit, spice and lovely floral component. All carried through to the extremely vibrant spicy palate with hints of mushrooms, wet stone and dried roses. Love the grip on the finish. I came back to this wine after a couple hours and it was much more subdued, but the first hour was exciting.

Flight 3 (1 Note)

  • 1990 Domaine Leroy Romanée St. Vivant 96 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Romanée St. Vivant Grand Cru

Absolutely massive compared to the prior to Burgs. This might as well have been a Kosta Browne. That said, huge forward and perfumed nose of ripe red fruit, loads of spice, background of dark fruit and mushroom notes. Ripe, dense and concentrated on the palate. The tannin was much more noticeable in comparison to the previous two wines. Very sexy and this will last a long time. Hope to try it again in 10 years.

Flight 4 (4 Notes)

  • 1959 Bodegas Vega-Sicilia Ribera del Duero Único 94 Points

Spain, Castilla y León, Ribera del Duero

Finally I get to have "that" bottle of Unico. Wow, amazing nose of mature red and black fruit, old cedar and burnt coffee component. This did not have quite the concentration on the palate as the 1960 or 1961 up next but the nose alone is worth buying this wine. Round and silky in the mouth.

  • 1960 Bodegas Vega-Sicilia Ribera del Duero Único 93 Points

Spain, Castilla y León, Ribera del Duero

Less expressive on the nose than the 1959 but still showing off great dark fruit, very slight cedar and coffee. More of the same on the palate which was fat in the middle, but fell off on the finish. Great silky texture.

  • 1961 Bodegas Vega-Sicilia Ribera del Duero Único 98 Points

Spain, Castilla y León, Ribera del Duero

Ok, this did it for me. I now love Unico. Absolutely stunning nose of dark fruit, coffee and cedar. Very forward and expressive with so much detail I got lost. Beautifully concentrated on the palate. Rich and layered with amazing symmetry and balance. Love the polished texture and a great example of power without weight. Really superb.

  • 1965 Bodegas Vega-Sicilia Ribera del Duero Único 92 Points

Spain, Castilla y León, Ribera del Duero

This seemed more advanced than the 1961, but exhibited a nice mix of similar flavors and textures, but they were not as precise as the other vintages. Delicious, but this had tough competition tonight.

Flight 5 (3 Notes)

  • 1953 Château Latour Grand Vin 93 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Fully mature and open nose of dark fruit, earth, cigar and leather. More dark fruit and leather on the palate. Soft and elegant, but could stand up to a steak. Love the full and open texture. Graceful old wine.

  • 1955 Château Latour Grand Vin 91 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Much more advanced than the other bottles. Not sure if it was the vintage or storage. Nice old dark fruit, coffee, smoke and touch of mint on the palate. Medium finish.

  • 1959 Château Latour Grand Vin 97 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Open and forward nose of mature dark fruit, leather, graphite and cigar box. Touch of mint, amount other things on the palate. Incredibly elegant texture and detail that hit all corners of the tongue. I wish I had had this earlier in the evening because it was impossible to appreciate all of nuances at this point. Incredible wine.

Closing

An amazing night and I was very happy to be included. The UNICOs were an eye opener.
