Flight 1 - MAIN (9 Notes)

  • 1976 Couly-Dutheil Chinon La Baronnie Madeleine 87 Points

    France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Chinon

    (9/6/2014)

Lots of mushrooms, freshly picked porcini, dirt and pine forest undergrowth. High acidity, ok fruit with a dry finish. Impressively alive for its age, but painfully lacking both length and complexity.

  • 2010 Antonin Guyon Aloxe-Corton 1er Cru Les Fournières 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Aloxe-Corton 1er Cru

    (9/6/2014)

#BYOB - Lovely, quite accessible Burgundy. Nose is dominated by oak, but refined oak. Coffee and toasted bread. There is plenty of light red berries, but just a hint of spiciness. Light body, with good intensity and high acidity. Finish is slightly tannic and raw.

  • 2001 Château Montus Madiran Cuvée Prestige 89 Points

    France, Southwest France, Madiran

    (9/6/2014)

#BYOB - Lots of fruit, cassis, plums, butterscotch and oak, but also a quite unpleasant tone of band aid and nail polish remover. High acidity, intense fruit with distinct tannins and a really good length. A high quality wine, but not really in my taste.

  • 2010 K Vintners The Creator 91 Points

USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Walla Walla Valley

    (9/6/2014)

#BYOB - Heavy nose with tons of fruit, plums, blackberries. Smoky tar aroma reminiscent of ashtray, and lots of vanilla and liquorice. Even though the wine is packed with fruit there is a fresh acidity and a dry, just slightly tannic finish. Full bodied, with high intensity and good length. A slight alcoholic warmth, but not enough to bother me. A really impressive wine! Had us fooled for a modern style Spanish wine.

  • 2004 Tahbilk Cabernet Sauvignon Eric Stevens Purbrick 93 Points

Australia, Victoria, Central Victoria, Nagambie Lakes

    (9/6/2014)

#BYOB - Absolutely fabulous wine! Ceder, cigar box, some spices, orange peel, cool mint and red fruit. Very tasty, mature fruit on the palate. Medium bodied with a very balanced acidity. Distinct dry tannins on the long finish makes my mouth salivate!

  • 2006 Bodega Benegas Cabernet Franc Benegas Lynch Libertad Vineyards 87 Points

    Argentina, Mendoza, Maipú

    (9/7/2014)

#BYOB - Had heard very good of this wine, and it was utterly disappointing to learn what I had in the glass. Nothing on the nose that I usualy associates with CF, only lots of oak, candy-ish fruit, cherries, raspberries, and canned corn. Better on the palate with a clear acidity and decent intensity. Fruit feels very young, and there is a bitter astringency in the tannins. At first it felt unbalanced, but it got better during the night.
But the ridiculously heavy bottle just feels like a bad joke.

  • 2006 Errazuriz Don Maximiano Founder's Reserve 90 Points

    Chile, Aconcagua Valley

    (9/7/2014)

#BYOB - overpowering nose of creme de cassis. Some other dark, red berries, blackberries and plums but having trouble getting past the intense blackcurrant. Good acidity, young slightly rough tannins, full bodied and good length. Well made, but feels slightly one dimensional and to be honest very boring.

  • 2009 Bodega Catena Zapata Malbec Adrianna Vineyard 92 Points

Argentina, Mendoza, Valle de Uco, Gualtallary

    (9/7/2014)

#BYOB - Very fruity nose, inky almost. Blackcurrants, but not as much and as one-sided as the Don Maximiano that came later in the flight, but slightly more refined with some earthy notes. There is also lots of oak, roasted oak and tar. Impressive concentration and length. Medium acidity and nice grippy tannins. Undoubtedly a grand wine. And would be fun to try in 5-7 years.

  • 2002 Heitz Cellar Cabernet Sauvignon Trailside Vineyard 87 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley, Rutherford

    (9/7/2014)

#BYOB - This really was a disappointment as well. Lots of dried, sweet fruit on the nose. Raisins, chocolate, punschpraliner (Arrack Punch candy) and blueberries. Distinct alcohol aromas as well. Full bodied, with a sweet fruit, slightly matured, Medium acidity and good length. Warm finish, with moderate, but present tannins. Had this for a Amarone. Slightly better on day 2.

Flight 2 - BONUS (5 Notes)

  • 2006 Château Mont-Redon Châteauneuf-du-Pape 86 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

    (9/7/2014)

#BYOB - Slightly cooked nose, with sour cherries, oak, light VA, and dried fruit. Medium body, with a really dry and tannic finish. Good acidity and decent length. Nothing wrong with it, just lacking a bit in complexity and intensity and had probably fared better without the superb competition.

  • 1995 Château Gruaud Larose Sarget de Gruaud Larose 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

    (9/7/2014)

#BYOB - WOTN! Nose is archetypical mature Bordeaux. Cedar, tobacco, leather, bretty barnyard, outhouse, slight coffee. A real sniffer, and one of the few bottles that were completely empty at the end. Good, high, but round acidity. Great mature fruit, light body, and a nice fresh dry finish. A true relief among the nights very powerful fruit dominated reds.

  • 2012 Giant Steps Pinot Noir Sexton Vineyard 90 Points

Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Yarra Valley

    (9/7/2014)

#BYOB - Big, fruity nose, but rather red than black berries. Some spiciness, pepper, black tea, and cinnamon. Distinct, but well balanced oak. Good acidity, generous fruit and good length. A dry, but not astringent finish.

  • 2007 Bernard Levet Côte-Rôtie Améthyste 93 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

    (9/7/2014)

#BYOB - A close second tonight! I love this style of Syrah! Black pepper, white pepper, barnyard, manure, sausage, steak tartare and dark but cool fruit.
On the palate the wine is absolutely outstanding. High acidity, inky, almost salty fruit, round, but with a dry finish. High intensity and a length to die for.

  • 1999 Domaine Machard de Gramont Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Damodes

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru

    (9/7/2014)

#BYOB - Very divided on this wine. First impression is awfull. over-ripe nose of mainly cooked cabbage and funk. Palate is raw and unbalanced, high acidity, tart tannins and short on fruit. But with time and temperature the wine starts to grow on me. Very good length and out comes more fruit that gives an overall better balance. Will try tonight for a day 2 evaluation.
