An impromptu lunch at Dave's (one of the wine ark crowd) drew all of us along for the last BBQ of winter. Snags and steaks abounded with a beautiful dill based potato salad and half a dozen reds. Nom nom nom as they say. Pudding was tarte tatin and a glass of sauterne (I think second wine of giraud, 2009 vintage, from the half bottle, very pleasant)
Lovely lunch, company and wine. Pity about the 97 Penfolds but very generous of Dave to pull out the 98. My wine of the afternoon was the Pupillin Ploussard followed very closely by the Brunel Les Cailloux…both showing very well.
2011 Philippe Bornard Poulsard Arbois Pupillin Point Barre
France, Jura, Arbois Pupillin
aromas of earth, red berry - strawberry, slight leather, biscuit and sour red cherry. In the mouth the wine is juicy, spicy with flavours of red cherry and berry, almost a kirsch note. Slight bitterness with the chalky tannic grip and a little alcohol warmth lends a minty quality (for some reason) nice.

2007 Curly Flat Pinot Noir Williams Crossing
Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Macedon Ranges
Medium plus intensity ripe cherry and spiced red berries especially ripe red currant and clove, cream vanilla, toast and some stalkiness and alcohol heat. In the mouth the wine has slightly sour flavours of spiced berry and cherry, very fine silky tannin, a little short with some tightness and bitterness on the finish.

2000 Les Cailloux (Lucien et André Brunel) Châteauneuf-du-Pape
France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Medium minus intensity aromas of farmyard funk, meat, spice - almost white pepper - over volatile red berry fruit. On the palate there are flavours of biscuit and red berry fruit which tends to strawberries, slight peppery spice, slightly unripe chalky tannic grip that dries the mid palate. Touch of alcohol warmth on the medium plus length finish. Nice

2006 Montes Syrah Folly La Finca de Apalta
Chile, Rapel Valley, Colchagua Valley
blackberry and sweaty Ribena dominates slight volatile acid sourness and muted cream and vanilla no the nose. In the mouth the wine is juicy with black pepper dominating black fruits with touches of liquorice and slightly course grained floury tannin rolls over the fruit which does persist on the medium plus length finish that has a little alcohol warmth.

2006 Rolf Binder/Veritas "Bull's Blood"
Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley
Aromas of ripe cherry, cream, chocolate, vanilla and coconut. More of the same on the palate. Fine textured but weighty tannin. Alcohol warmth. Fruit carries. Nice but very fruit bomb.

1998 Penfolds Shiraz St. Henri
Australia, South Australia
muted black fruit, agitation reveals metallic black berry and cherry. Plentiful spice - especially black pepper, slight sour milk, vanilla and very slight green root note. In the mouth the wine has flavours of sweet and sour black berry fruit with spice, cream and vanilla. Touches of chocolate. A bit of alcohol warmth on the finish but not intrusive. Hmm for me.
