Chicago: wine, food, friends...cigars!

Blackbird, Les Nomades, Naha, with lunch at Shaw's Crab House
Tasted Wednesday, September 17, 2014 - Saturday, September 20, 2014 by Tim Heaton with 1,113 views

Introduction

A gathering of good friends, from all across America, to celebrate friendship and the 55th birthday of one in our group. Chicago had been discussed for some time - it's pretty much got it all, great food, culture, wine friendly town, etc.

Planning began roughly 3 months ahead of time (hotel was first, which was a good call, as the downtown was basically full-up during the week we were there, with -0- availability at our hotel). Several venue suggestions were made regarding dining during this period, with the group weighing pros and cons before ultimately deciding upon (4) different venues - 3 for dinner, and one for a group lunch. With three weeks to go, we had signed all of our dining contracts (typical for large/private parties), and pretty much had declared our wines.

In attendance:

Izzy/Kim (North Carolina)
Brad/Lesley (Florida)
Tom (Texas)
Dawn/Joe (Indiana)
Scott (Pac NW)
Tim/Alicia (Colorado)

Flight 1 - Blackbird (12 Notes)

Some enjoyed the menu more than others. That said, some dishes were more interesting, better conceived than others, too. The private room was very private, if a bit cold. Service was ok, nothing special. The people there were nice, but overall it lacked charm. One upside was that we only had to walk 15 feet or so from the front door to a little streetside patio of sorts (Avec) where we got to enjoy a night cap (completely unnecessary, of course) of Single Malt Scotch. Stumbling back from there, for 30 minutes, to our hotel, is a great memory.

Our (fixed) menu:

grilled sepia with shitake jam, beets, chamomile, and shiso
confit fjord trout with zucchini, smoked serranos, trout roe, and purslane
seared sea scallop with sweet corn, pickled blueberries, chervil, and black ramp
corned beef tongue with wheat berries, avocado, leeks, and beer vinegar
schmaltz-poached chicken breast and leg with smoked vidalia onion, king trumpet mushrooms, green garbanzos, and pistachios
grilled striploin with blistered fava beans, walnut gnocchi, and grated wasabi
doe run ‘st. malachi’ cow’s milk gouda with red miso cheesecake, anise streussel, sweet cherries, and fermented black bean
chamomile pickled cantaloupe with mish mish granola and toasted rice
roasted apricot sorbet with tahini fudge, honied kefir, sesame leaf croquant, and cilantro

  • 2008 Veuve Fourny & Fils Champagne Rosé Les Rougemonts Extra Brut

    France, Champagne

    (9/17/2014)

Very firm, solidly built. Chalky, with brilliant freshness, really lively acids. By the second glass, more minerals and crunchy fruit comes forward, but honestly, if I had these, I'd let them rest for a decade - they've got the stuffing to well exceed the (modest) price point. recommended

    Served non-blind at an offline.

  • 2004 Pierre Gimonnet & Fils Champagne Premier Cru Special Club

    France, Champagne, Champagne Premier Cru

    (9/17/2014)

Really delicious. Interesting and very tasty blend that shows well today and also exhibits some really great raw material for substantive development over the next 5-10 years as well. Subtle toast on a backdrop of citrus and orchard fruit leavened with minerals and chalk. A lovely, never-ending stream of very fine bubbles. This is classy stuff. recommended

    PnP, served non-blind.

  • 2005 Domaine François Cotat Sancerre La Grande Côte

France, Loire Valley, Upper Loire, Sancerre

    (9/17/2014)

The color would suggest just a couple of years after release - the acids, pretty much the same thing: this is ageing quite slowly. But, with 3 hours of Audoze, this was open (though not fully, could still use some time in the cellar - palate preference depending) to come to its fullest expression. Medium(-) bodied, with lively aromas and full-ish stone and citrus fruits in the mouth. Lingering, vibrant and noble. Just lovely. 13,5% abv, thru 2023; highly recommended

    Served non-blind.

  • 2011 Littorai Chardonnay B. A. Thieriot Vineyard

USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast

    (9/17/2014)

My first Littorai in some years, and, IIRC, my first ever from this vineyard. Served alongside a magnum of Peter Michaels' Point Rouge, the two had less in common than one might think, though each had just as many attributes in its favor. This was lighter, and brighter than the 2006 PM, more oily and citrusy, too, with really unique mineral and honeycomb character that tantalized the mind and palate alike. I seldom use the expression 'crunchy fruit', but it sure seems appropriate here; exciting stuff. Original, balanced, refreshing -- what's not to love? Thru 2021, highly recommended

Slow-O 1 hour, served non-blind. Many thanks to the cookies for sharing :D

  • 2006 Peter Michael Chardonnay Point Rouge

USA, California, Sonoma County, Knights Valley

    (9/17/2014)

{en magnum} Fresh, but also developed in this format (I thought that it might be too tight still, but that wasn't the case) so as to avoid showing anything hot or non-integrated. (if) Served blind, first (all) instincts go to CA, though I'm glad it didn't do so in a way that was gratuitous. Our bottle had deeply pitched acids that aptly managed multiple layers of orchard, stone and citrus fruits that would have been awkward and flabby absent the significant lift. The abv is adequately resolved, but prolly best to aerate to decanter for 60 minutes, anyway. Reading some other notes (after the fact), I think I got lucky and found this in a good place. Served side by side with a 2011 Littorai Theriot, this was a fabulous lesson in diversity.

    Slow-O 1 hour, served non-blind.

  • 2006 Morlet Family Vineyards Chardonnay Coup de Coeur

    USA, California, Sonoma County

    (9/17/2014)

A fascinating contrast to the 2006 Peter Michael Point Rouge and the 2011 Littorai Theriot served next to it. Medium-bodied, but the cut was significant, effortlessly hoisting and clearly delineating layer upon layer of fruit; tricks (my) the mind, at times that I found myself looking at the bottle, expecting to see it was some type of blend with Sauvignon Blanc or something. And while this debut vintage may have been much more powerful and weighty at release, it was in a perfect place on the night, and, IIRC, the first bottle that was emptied. Excellent with food, or on its own. Artful, which is to say, not overworked, clumsy or hot. Thru 2020, recommended

    Slow-O 1 hour, served non-blind.

  • 1999 Dominus Estate

    USA, California, Napa Valley

    (9/17/2014)

{magnum} This bottle has shown up at various tastings a number of times over the years, and depending on when it does (and how it's been stored, etc.), I've noticed a good amount of bottle variation. Thankfully, for us, that variation proved heavily in our favor. I agree with another tn here in that this needed more aeration in order to show its best. In fact, 1/3 of a bottle remained for day 2, and it was magnificent, in full bloom, if you will. On a night with serious heavy-hitter reds, this was a standout for its grace and artful composition. Having said all that, I still prefer the (magnum) 1997 served two nights later. In a 750 format, it's likely time to drink up, but in this magnum, there's still has another 4-5 years of very pleasurable drinking ahead; fully resolved on all fronts. highly recommended

Served non-blind. Aerated to decanter for 90 minutes.

  • 2000 Schrader Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon Original Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard

    USA, California, Napa Valley, Oakville

    (9/17/2014)

Leather, cassis, plum and pen ink with flavors largely following the nose. Elegant, full-bodied, and fully resolved, with some of its former bulk still shining through from moment to moment. Pleasurable, and very good with food. Certainly on the back half of its plateau; drink up.

Aerated to decanter 90 minutes, served non-blind.

  • 2001 Shafer Cabernet Sauvignon Hillside Select

USA, California, Napa Valley, Stags Leap District

    (9/17/2014)

{magnum} A divisive wine by its very nature, I suppose; perhaps more so at this stage and in this format. No need to run through the descriptors at this point, as it's pretty well documented. Would like to see this in 10 year (750ml) and/or 20 years (1.5L) as I prefer nuanced tertiary to modern/sappy secondary. Let these rest unless you're just ready to get your hedonism on.

Aerated to decanter 90 minutes, this was still unfolding some three hours in; served non-blind.

  • 2001 Pride Mountain Vineyards Reserve Claret

USA, California, North Coast, Napa / Sonoma

    (9/17/2014)

No need to wait unless tertiary is your game (and it's already got some, surprisingly); for now, solidly in the secondary development camp. Nothing heavy handed or over-ripe, instead, a sensibly full-bodied wine that displays some really smart blending. With a 6 hour Audoze, this was ready to go, and held strong into day 2 as well. The coolness of the mountain fruit was nicely offset by the warmth of the vintage. Very good toward excellent. 14,4% abv., drink thru 2022

Served non-blind. I will decant the next one 90 minutes prior to service.

  • 2002 Hundred Acre Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon Kayli Morgan

    USA, California, Napa Valley

    (9/17/2014)

Dense, but equally well-lifted, which makes for a textural pleasure palace of sorts. Fine tannins, resolved EtOH, and deeply (dark/black) fruited; manages to keep from getting too high-toned and anonymous. Delicious, and, while not in my wheelhouse, well composed and undeniably pure. Serious length. Toward the end of its secondary development; 5-7 more very good years ahead, at least.

Aerated to decanter 90 minutes, served non-blind. Would advise to Audoze all day.

  • 1983 Vier Jahreszeiten Winzergenossenschaft Dürkheimer Feuerberg Huxelrebe Beerenauslese

    Germany, Pfalz

    (9/17/2014)

{375ml} Holy cow, was this ever good. Still managing some decent freshness, notwithstanding its advanced color. But really, the strong suit here was complexity, the type that comes only with age and from really good raw material, too. All around, an excellent example of the variety, style, place and time. drink thru 2022, highly recommended

Slow-O 30 minutes, served non-blind; continued to open up through the final sip.

    Austria, Burgenland, Neusiedlersee

    (9/18/2014)

{en magnum} Dark color, even in this format. With a 6 hour Audoze (and a slight chill), this was totally ready to go. In a magical place right now, with untold layers of sweetly laden orchard, citrus and stone fruits. With time, some chamomile tea, brittle, minerals and fresh honeycomb emerge. Stunning on night 1, this was firmly in the epic camp on night two, more so when paired with a very creative foie gras dish at Naha. A huge thanks to drycab for sharing this treasure. Never cloying, always mystical. very highly recommended

{en magnum} Totally on point tonight, and, in a lineup of stellar wines, this still stood apart - as much for its focus as for its brilliant purity and depth. If this bottle was representative, the best is yet ahead. A rare and delicious treat. Drink thru 2030, highly recommended

  • 1990 Veuve Clicquot Champagne Brut La Grande Dame

    France, Champagne

    (9/18/2014)

{en magnum} Came across as mature (and I mean that in a good way), with a brilliant, gentle nature to it that, in a way, set the pace of the evening (a good thing as there were 16 wines, including several mags, and 9 people). Delicate, with some prickly freshness popping in from time to time to keep the party going. A welcome treat, shared by a dear soul. highly recommended

  • 2002 Domaine William Fèvre Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos

France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru

    (9/18/2014)

Light toward medium straw color, almost grey at the edge. The color portended a lighter wine, and that's what we got. Chalk, grapefruit, citrus pith, minerals and delicate white floral. A welcome change of pace from some of the more masculine-styled wines that were in the line up. Highly finessed, but also on the back of its downward slide. Compelling with a first course of smoked salmon with caramelized shallot purée, but no doubt better for some with the oysters on the half with lemon and mignonette. No p-mox + highly elegant = lovely stuff. recommended

    (9/18/2014)

An absolute wow wine, though not at first, as this needed some air to really show its true colors. Fine art in a glass, and one of those rare wines that defies description, if for no other reason than I know it's only getting better from here. Medium-bodied, superb cut and elegant depth; took nearly a minute to finish on the palate. highly recommended

    Served non-blind; a true gem.

  • 2000 Bonneau du Martray Corton-Charlemagne

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru

    (9/18/2014)

{en magnum} Light-medium straw color, no sign of age. Great typicity on the nose and palate, with extra textural depth and lively acids. One of those wines that's hard (read: impossible?) to put down, even harder in this format. The sea, chalk, citrus, orchard fruit and toasted pecans. Still quite fresh, but also exhibits some softness at the shoulders that comes with age. Continued to unfold over 2 hours. I'm not sure I'd wait, it's just so good right now. recommended

Served non-blind; prolly best with at least 30 minutes in decanter. Paired just as well with asparagus, shaved truffle, asparagus gelée, jamon iberico as it did with the stone crab salad, endive, truffle purée and avocado.

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru

    (9/18/2014)

As I get older, it's not that easy to drink a wine that I know is likely to outlive me (why you little!!), and I believe this is such a wine even if the current CT window suggests thru 2021, my guess is that's when this will begin to get rolling. For now, it's tight, autumnal, and stern at times given its very bold, but fine, structure. A complete wine, but for now, we're only given glimpses of the greatness to come; notwithstanding all of this, it's delicious, but also begs for food. highly recommended

Served non-blind; wait a decade, for the real show.

  • 2000 Domaine du Pégau Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée da Capo

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

    (9/18/2014)

{en magnum} The color shows little sign of age, which is not too surprising in this format, I suppose. And the nose, too, takes its time opening up. This continued to unfold and develop (the nuances and perfumes seeming to double each 30 minutes) throughout the 3 hours it was open. No doubt it would have continued past that, too. Full-bodied, but in a restrained style with no excess EtOH or extraction spoiling things. No doubt this will live another 15 years in this format, but I have to think a 750 is in its sweet spot right about now. Delicious with a duo of slow roasted veal, lamb loin, pommes purée, eggplant, lamb jus au pistou. highly recommended

Served non-blind; be sure to give it some aeration, first. Worlds apart from the sappy, gloopy '07.

    (9/18/2014)

{magnum} Served side by side with a magnum of 2000 Pegau Capo, it would be splitting hairs to try and choose a favorite. This has slightly more acidity, and slightly better structure, but in the end it comes down to personal style preference. A brilliant chassis, with delicate layers of red and blue fruits that sit atop a bed of cool stones and dried herbs; finish lasts for a minute+. Has two decades or more in this format. highly recommended

Served non-blind, give it several hours aeration in decanter prior to service.

  • 2000 Château Léoville Poyferré

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

    (9/18/2014)

An absolutely delicious wine. But its life in the winner's circle is very short lived as the '00 Pegau Capo and '98 l'Ermite are poured directly afterwards, which made this a very distant memory in no time at all. Full-bodied, chewy at times, this has a good amount of depth and considerable purity, but the acidity may not be enough for the long run -- perhaps best over the next 10 years or so. Delicious, and not too serious, so have some fun with it. 13,0% abv., recommended

    Served non-blind. Slow-O 6 hours.

Flight 3 - Naha (1-star, since 2010) - over priced, a bit soulless, not planning on returning or recommending (10 Notes)

We were seated in the main dining room (table for 8 that night). The food was good/very good. One or two dishes were excellent. We had fun (uh, 16 bottles, LOTS of them mags), but I don't think it's on anyone's radar to return. Service was OK. Found out at the end of the night that their 'checked bag fees' came in the form of water. $170 for water (no name water, mind you). Whatever.

Our (fixed) menu:

“French Kiss” Oyster from New Brunswick,
Chardonnay Vinegar Sorbet, Salmon Roe and Tarragon
*
Late Summer Sweet Corn Soup, Confit Garlic Custard,
Burgundy Snails, Buttermilk Ricotta and Burgundy Truffles
*
Sea Scallop “Dusted” with Vanilla Bean, Citrus and Spices,
Hawaiian Hamakua Farm Hearts of Palm, Musk Melon,
Caramelized Belgian Endive and Spearmint
*
Alaskan Troll Caught King Salmon and Maine Lobster,
Beluga Lentils and Black Trumpet Mushrooms, “Big Leaf” Spinach,
Grilled Scallions and Red Wine Lobster Jus, Sweet Pea Salad
*
Hudson Valley Foie Gras with a “Tarte Tatin” of Fennel,
Black Mission Figs and Mache, Preserved Black Walnuts, Minus 8 Ice Vinegar,
Licorice Root and Rose Petal Marmalade
*
A “Brace” of Roast Quail, Slow Cooked Applewood Slab Bacon and Cockscomb,
Neptune Grapes, Tuscan Kale, Soft Corn Grits and Sauce Arabica
*
Braised Short Ribs of Beef and Veal Sweetbreads
Scented with Black Cardamom and Plums, Lobster Mushrooms,
Luxury Pumpkin Puree and Swiss Chard, Hemp Seed Fattoush
*
Bittersweet Chocolate Pavé, Milk Chocolate Beignet,
Caramel Corn, Chocolate Cream and Malted Milk Ice Cream

LOTS of great pairings, but the 2000 Alois Kracher Welschriesling TBA #10 Zwischen den Seen {en magnum} and the Foie Gras dish was mind blowing

Broad shouldered, but equally well lifted, this is in a sweet spot now and for the next 6-8 years. Lively, slightly spiritous, with several layers of rich orchard fruit, minerals and some spice. A veritable coin toss as to which one it paired better with, the French Kiss Oyster from New Brunswick,
Chardonnay Vinegar Sorbet, Salmon Roe and Tarragon or the Late Summer Sweet Corn Soup, Confit Garlic Custard, Burgundy Snails, Buttermilk Ricotta and Burgundy Truffles. Now that I reflect, I think the latter, because of the richness. Really good juice. recommended

The one time I don't sniff my empty glassware, and I end up dumping the first glass out due to weird/chemical smells. A few minutes pass (after I asked the somm if he smelled it too - he didn't observe anything wrong, I sigh), I see everyone else at the table is really enjoying this, so I smell the wine in my wife's glass, it's perfect. Glassware replaced, the wine is just fine. A solid example of a well-aged Champers, with soft, tiny bubbles, hints of dough and minerals and a med+ finish. Excellent on its on or with food. Best to enjoy sooner than later, I think. recommended

I'm not sure which was more fun, enjoying this with the dinner, or comparing it with the 2009 Araujo Eisele Vyd Sauv Blanc in the glass right next to it. I'll go with the comparing, as there were things in common, and clear differences, too, but both worked exceptionally well with the rich food of one-star restaurant Naha, Chicago. Lovely texture, but also some spicy, peachy depth to it, along with abundant acidity. Delicious, and not so serious; a wine to enjoy with good friends, good food and really have some fun with it. A little something for everyone, I think. Thru 2018, recommended

  • 2009 Araujo Estate Sauvignon Blanc Eisele Vineyard

    USA, California, Napa Valley

    (9/19/2014)

Green tea at first, quickly replaced by freshly sliced peaches, pears and citrus spray; later, honey, butter, minerals, persimmon. The palate is more medium than light-bodied, with ample acids and, as expected, joyous textural pleasure. An excellent year for this SB, or at least it was raised as such. There we several people at the table, so our pours were limited to just 2oz a piece, but thankfully there was no shortage of other wines, and with most of the crowd having moved on to some other wines, I poured 2 more ounces. Twice. Which is to say, it was very good. Excellent with food, too. Thru 2018, recommended

Ok, here's a real treat, and a great exercise: drinking this side by side with a magnum of the '03. As expected, this keeps it closer to the vest, with abundant fruit, racy acids and seamless structure. The '03, just as pretty, but so much more approachable now. I took my time with these two wines, for good reason - even though three more (different) mags hung in the balance. Yes, we basically closed the place. Slow-O 2 hours, aerated to decanter and then returned to bottle for service. Thru 2040, highly recommended

Richly textured, but heavily perfumed, too, with less of a chewy body than I was expecting (for that matter, more acidity than I was expecting, as well). While not quite as interesting on the nose/palate as the '01, it's not far behind, but moreover, it's a joy to drink at the moment, given proper aeration, of course. Notes of black tea, and freshly picked cherries keep this lively. This will likely add complexity and length in the coming years. So glad it wasn't shut down, or worse. recommended

Aerated to decanter for two hours, returned to bottle and served non-blind.

  • 1997 Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona Brunello di Montalcino Vigna di Pianrosso

Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

    (9/19/2014)

{en magnum} Wow, the scores are all over the place on this one. Thankfully, our bottle was in excellent condition, the wine showing brilliantly after just two hours in decanter. Good typicity, with all the hallmarks of the vintage pouring through. Generous, but well-lifted, this went back and forth between 'pretty' and 'masculine', which kept it interesting all night. Leather, scorched earth, espresso, ripe cherry, dusty cedar; fine, grippy tannins, alcohol resolved. Delicious, and a welcome surprise in that it was so very approachable. Thru 2027. highly recommended

Served non-blind. Served with braised ribs of beef and veal sweetbreads, this was a winning pairing.

  • 1998 Bodegas Muga Rioja Gran Reserva Prado Enea

Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alta, Rioja

    (9/19/2014)

{en magnum} Probably a decade away from being interesting (for my palate, anyway), but no denying it's a delicious drop. Full(-) body, this hits a few high tone fruit notes as well as some leather, cream, . The fact that the grapes for this bottling (and the Torre) come in last is pretty evident; the same for the fining with egg whites - it's texturally noticeable, rendering this a little too linear for me right now. 80% Tempranillo, with the balance Garnacha, Mazuelo, and Graciano. It's aged for one year in large oak followed by 3 years in new French oak and 3 years in bottle prior to release. Enjoyable, delicious, but not yet interesting.

    Served non-blind.

  • 1997 Dominus Estate

    USA, California, Napa Valley

    (9/19/2014)

{en magnum}. A contender for WOTN, which is saying something as there were a lot of really stellar wines. The nose is piercingly vivid, full of as many descriptors as you can think of: red currant, tobacco, soil, dark chocolate, red floral, and even some brown spice. This crackled on the nose, and tingled the palate - not with clumsy acids, or excess EtOH, but with really lively purity. Totally on point tonight with two hours in decanter. Beautiful now, with a decade or two left (in this format). highly recommended

Served non-blind. Thank you, Izzy :D

Flight 4 - Shaw's Crab House (downtown location) (6 Notes)

Love, love, love this place. Old school, new school. Really great food (we each ordered off the menu), and good/great service, too (exception: Brad's espresso?) We were seated in one of their private rooms, a nice affair that looked out on the main dining room. Ask for Allison if you're going, or the private dining mgr if you're with a large group. Will definitely return/recommend. 9 very happy people left there that day - proud to say I know all of them a little better.

  • 2012 Morlet Family Vineyards La Proportion Dorée

USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast

    (9/18/2014)

{en magnum} This made an appearance during a casual lunch at a dual vertical of Didier Dagueneau's Pur Sang and Silex offerings. And, I believe, it took top honors. Fresh, and full, but offering brilliant cut and minerally, punchy orchard and tropical fruit flavors. A delicious blend that makes you sit up straight in your chair, right before you look at the bottle to see if there's still another glass inside. At Shaw's Crabhouse in downtown Chicago, this proved very versatile with a wide range of seafood dishes. highly recommended, thru 2021

  • 2006 Didier Dagueneau Les Jardins de Babylone Moelleux

    France, Southwest France, Jurançon

    (9/18/2014)

Absolutely the perfect ending to a casual lunch that featured a dual vertical of Pur Sang and Silex. Tropical nose, drenched with honey and baked citrus, but also clean as a whistle on the very fresh, elegantly textured palate. Long, with cascading fruits that fully saturate before being swept away by unseen, plentiful acidity. A genuine treat, this is in a perfect place right now. highly recommended

    Served non-blind; Audozed 30 minutes.

  • 2002 Didier Dagueneau Pur Sang

France, Loire Valley, Upper Loire, Pouilly-Fumé

    (9/18/2014)

This has aged out pretty nicely, but I preferred it upon release (of course my palate preferences were slightly different then, too), though I didn't prefer it for stylistic differences, but rather because I think this was best when it was freshest. For my palate, anyway. Notwithstanding all that, this bottle, in pristine condition, was delicious, and mature (though the color was like waxy hay, not advanced/dark at all). Saline, tropical fruits, loads of acids still and highly pleasurable with King crab legs. Drink up.

    Served non-blind; side-by-side with the 2004

  • 2004 Didier Dagueneau Pur Sang

France, Loire Valley, Upper Loire, Pouilly-Fumé

    (9/18/2014)

Far better (and more interesting) at release than it is now; bottle was in pristine condition. Has lost some of its shimmer, the nose, too, is dialed way back such that's its nice, and clean, but not compelling in any way. Time to drink up. Served side-by-side with the 2002, both were long in the tooth, but still good with food. The 2005 was on the table, but we ran out of time and didn't get to open it - had we, both the 02 and 04 would have become distant memories in short order.

    Slow-O 30 minutes, served non-blind.

  • 2009 Didier Dagueneau Silex

France, Loire Valley, Upper Loire, Pouilly-Fumé

    (9/18/2014)

Served next to the 2007 Silex, this was my favorite of the two. Already very approachable, nicely balanced with good vibrancy of fruit, and precision. However, I will say that I think the two wines are in vastly different places at this point in time, the '07 will be longer-lived (simply put, it has more fruit, and enough acids). So, drink these now while your '07s continue to come together. I have to say it was great fun seeing the dad's last effort side-by-side with the son's first (completely) solo effort - indeed, each left his mark. recommended

    Slow-O 1 hour, served non-blind.

  • 2007 Didier Dagueneau Silex

France, Loire Valley, Upper Loire, Pouilly-Fumé

    (9/18/2014)

Herbs, hay, a whiff of anise seed, wet rocks, loam; the palate is medium-bodied, chewy at times, with a narrow (temperature) band of enjoyment for my palate. Distinctly rocky, and minerally on the nose, the aromas seem in a somewhat bitter contrast to the viscous fruit. In retrospect, we should have decanted this an hour. Give it another year or so in hopes that further integration is possible. Served side by side with the '09 Silex, I think the latter was my favorite my a fair margin (if only because the '09 is fully integrated and ready to roll, now).

    Slow-O 30 minutes, served non-blind.

Closing

If I can speak for the group, I believe that we'd definitely return to Les Nomades. In fact, it gets our highest marks. Blackbird was met with mixed reviews (the menu was appealing to some, less so to others), and Naha was stiff and overpriced, the food good/very good, but not 1-star - not sure any of us will be in a hurry to return there, either.

Truly a warm and generous lot, and very good traveling companions, too.

The next city is t/b/d, but New Orleans, San Diego, or Seattle seemed to be the cities most commonly discussed at length.
