Flight 1 (6 Notes)

  • 2007 Arcadian Chardonnay Sleepy Hollow Vineyard

USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Lucia Highlands

Showed a deeper gold color. Weight is medium plus, not quite heavy but there is some density here. Light caramel and coconut, whatever oak was used by Joe, to me at least it still remains with this wine. Lots of golden delicious apple, banana yet enough counter acidity to make it all work. In total, for me this sits somewhere between a decadent style and something cooler climate and given the weight of the wine and how that more forward fruit and wood tones express itself, I'd recommend this to be a drink now decision.

  • 2007 Williams Selyem Pinot Noir Peay Vineyard

USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast

Deep cherry, dark red apple, black cherry and moderate plus ripeness with cola nut. Expresses itself a bit bigger in tone that I prefer for my CA pinot noirs these days.

  • 2007 Rhys Pinot Noir Alpine Vineyard

    USA, California, Santa Cruz Mountains

I was surprised with this bottle how dominant the stem inclusuion still impacts the wine, as they appear in both the aromatic and palate still. They do add a cool complexity and discussion point but if you are of the persuasion of destemmed pinot noir, this may not appeal to you. There is a deep pomegranate here, jammy but not cloying, along with a bright acidity. FWIW, this didn't see a lot of air, maybe 2 hours and there is none left to taste today. As for a drink window, I don't see any hurry in drinking this now, as my bet is that this continues to develop and smooth out with time and turn into a real winner. Fine now, delicious actually, provided you have context for the herbal aspects of the whole cluster.

  • 2007 Joseph Swan Vineyards Pinot Noir Trenton Estate

USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley

Good stuff. Clove, asian 5 spice, dark toned fruit, herb, kiwi and a touch of loam. There is also a juicy aspect to the way this clears across the palate.

  • 2007 Copain Pinot Noir "En Haut" Kiser

USA, California, North Coast, Anderson Valley

Very surprised as to how more open this wine was this time. In comparison to the bottle I raved about a few months back, that bottles seemed to exhibit more slate and structure than the one tasted last night. Even tasted blind, this wine really says Copain and was evident to me because it has that AV signature. Red apple skin, beautifully balanced, suave with a sweet core of red and blue fruit with a lightly creamy finish. Super, the WOTN for me.

  • 2007 Anthill Farms Pinot Noir Peters Vineyard

USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast

I didn't like the aromatics on this wine, as there is something there turning me off--either something volatile or boozy, or both. If I put that aside, then I'm more pleased with the lighter ruby color, the pomegranate and strawberry fruit.
