  • 2010 Coudert Fleurie Clos de la Roilette

    France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Fleurie

Very different experience from my last bottle two years ago. Quite herbal and red-fruited on the nose, though something I couldn't identify seemed a bit off (not faulty). Reasonable balance, but not a lot of enjoyment. Not sure if this wasn't a representative bottle or these are just not aging gracefully.

  • 2011 Evening Land Vineyards Bourgogne 80 Points

    France, Burgundy, Bourgogne

Very smoky (burnt wood) nose that is hard to get past, though when you do, there is a bit of red fruit and green notes on the nose. The palate is quite pleasant, with a luscious mouthfeel, pretty cherries, and a fairly medium-long sour cherry/cranberry finish. And smoke. And burnt wood. And smoke.

  • 2007 Château Rayas Côtes du Rhône Château de Fonsalette Reserve

France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Côtes du Rhône

This is not at all the wine that I have had (and enjoyed!) previously. Medium-plus tawny color showing far too much age. A cherry liquor (or even blueberry jam) nose. Slightly spritzy. Spice, meat, and a very lifted (read, VA) quality to the fruit. On the palate, very rich fruit, white pepper. This tasted very rich, richer than it actually is. Some notes of an oxidized, fortified wine. This was intriguing for the "what is it" game, but not very enjoyable. I am sure that this is not a representative bottle.

  • 2010 Edmunds St. John Rocks and Gravel 88 Points

    USA, California

Medium ruby/purple, youthful color. An initial vinyl aroma quickly blew off. Bright red fruit, with a bit of herbal and mineral notes. Simple, but quite enjoyable. The only wine that I managed to ID all night.

  • 1995 Château La Louvière 94 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

Incredibly complex, interesting, and captivating nose of dried flowers, dried red and blue fruit, and a supporting cast from every category - herbs, earth, green pepper, etc. Absolutely beautiful nose. The palate also delivers, with red fruit and earth. Tannins suggest a life ahead of it, but why wait? Fantastic, and pretty much everyone's wine of the night.

  • 2007 Domaine Bernard Baudry Chinon Les Grézeaux

    France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Chinon

Aside from "earthy," this just initially seemed "dirty" and even a bit reminiscent of dishwater. Red berries, stems, earth. Plenty of structure, still quite young. Given that it was seriously outmatched in its flight, I thought "ehh" and didn't give it very much time or attention.

  • 1997 Zilliken (Forstmeister Geltz) Saarburger Rausch Riesling Auslese #9 94 Points

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

Sweet oranges, clementines, red apple, and a gas station flower shop. A slight vinyl-like aroma quickly blew off. Soaring lemon acidity. Honeyed notes do not dominate, and the sweetness is incredibly well-balanced. Citrus fruit salad, excellent acidity, minerals, and a slight dusty quality, continued through the very long finish. Wow!
