Introduction

This was a long overdue dinner with Ray and Marianne, and we had a great time catching up over some very nice Argentinian food at Bochinche. The Chorizo in particular was great stuff. The wines were off the list - interesting Argentinian wines, something I seldom drink.

Flight 1 (2 Notes)

  • 2010 Bodega Renacer Enamore 90 Points

    Argentina, Mendoza

45% Malbec, 5% Cabernet Franc, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 10% Bonarda, made in conjunction with Allegrini (of Amarone fame), in a similar ripasso style - this was an easy to drink wine that went well with the heavily flavoured Argentinian meat dishes that we had on the day. It may not be everyone's cup of tea, but I thought it was pretty good for what it is. The nose showed a mix of aromas very reminiscent of Amarone, with the sweet dried fruit notes of raisins and plums wed to a smoky, earthy, herby backdrop. On the palate, the wine showed a rather thick texture, with more of those preserved plums and sweet black raisin notes, all swirled around with a nice dose of smoke and spice. There was plenty of acidity to keep the wine balance in spite of its ripe weight, and some surprisingly fine tannins as well, all leading into a decent finish, with more earthy, herby notes setting in. A decent wine, good for early drinking.

  • 2009 Achával-Ferrer Quimera 91 Points

    Argentina, Mendoza, Lujan de Cuyo

An interesting blend of Malbec, Cab and Merlot, I thought this was pretty good - it went a treat with a nice slab of Patagonian ribeye done rare. It had a really attractive nose, with ripe black fruit wed to earthier tones of smoke and meat and bramble - that Malbec character coming out very attractively there. Good on the palate too. While young, this was clearly a well-made wine, with a certain polish showing in its fine tannins and fresh acidity that lent a nice clarity and tension to the wine's ripe dark fruited tones. Still a little one dimensional, I think this could do well in 5-10 years, and it probably has the balance and structure to go further. Good finish too, winding away with dark plum flavours laced with a smoky spice. Good.
