DWCC Grand Tasting with Jancis Robinson and Dr. Jose Vouillamoz

Jancis Robinson and Dr. Jose Vouillamoz led about 300 attendees of the 8th annual Digital Wine Communications Conference through an enjoyable and education tasting of 12 Swiss wines.

• 2012 Blaise Duboux Cuvée Vincent Calamin Grand Cru

  Switzerland, Vaud, Lavaux, Calamin Grand Cru

  Quite sharp aromatically. Grassy with some ash. Rather energetic, full, and powerful. Almost oily with a creamy mid-palate.

• 2010 Château Maison Blanche Chasselas Grand Cru

  Switzerland, Vaud, Chablais, Yvorne

  More honeyed with peaches & cream and orange on the nose. Wow, the palate is totally different from the nose. Brisk and citric. Really lovely, savory. My favorite of the flight.

  A bit more oxidative and full. Heavier. Nutty. My least favorite of the flight.

• 2013 Frédéric Dumoulin (L'Orpailleur) Petite Arvine

  Switzerland, Valais

  Oooh, I like those aromatics. White peach and grass. Ash. Wowza. Really stately, tart with a sweet Ruby Red grapefruit note. Nice ash on the finish. Powerful and complete. My favorite of the flight.

• 2005 Provins Petite Arvine Maitre de Chais

  A whiff of botrytis. Deep color. Vinified with some RS I would guess. There is nice acidity underneath this.

• 2002 Rouvinez Petite Arvine Château Lichten

  Switzerland, Valais

  Classic "old wine" smells. Very mature aromas. Still a great deal of acidity. Somewhat nutty on the finish.

• 2010 La Maison Carrée Pinot Noir

  Switzerland, Three Lakes, Neuchâtel, Auvernier

  Hooboy, a whole lot of "pickle barrel". Somewhat green and mean on the nose. Nicely silky on the palate though. Tart with lots of stem and green. Juicy and fun. Not terribly generous or pleasable overall but fresh and clean.

• 2011 Peter Wegelin - Scadenagut Blauburgunder Reserva Malans

  Switzerland, Eastern Switzerland, Graubünden, Malans

  Lots of oak showing, but there is breed there. Quite a bit of structure to this with a deep palate. As noted by Jancis, a "very pretty wine indeed." Hint of pomagranate, coffee. Quite nice. The most structure by far and my favorite of the flight.

• 2012 Claudy Clavien (La Cave des Champs) Pinot Noir La Part des Anges

  Switzerland, Valais, Les Coteaux de Sierre

  Struggling to find the nose. Some FCOJ (frozen concentrated orange juice) smells. Seems a little sweet on entry, but with time I am liking this more. It is the heaviest of the flight but still tart and energetic.

  Lots of coffee. It is hard to get much else on the nose. Much bigger than other Ticino Merlot I have tasted.

  Mmmm, me likey. Herbs, leaves, blackberries. Quite powerful and very Merlot. Also much bigger and more concentrated than other Ticino Merlot I have had but not overdone.

• 2011 Jean-Pierre Pellegrin Merlot

  Fruity. Blackberry, Wow, very, very fruity in fact. Quite deep and juicy, chocolate, a little sweet toward the end. Chocolate covered cherries in fact. Pretty bound up.
