Flight 1 - Main Event $20-40 Double Blind (9 Notes)

Lots of Rhone wines.
France or Italy only apparently.

  • 2011 Campogiovanni (San Felice) Rosso di Montalcino

Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Rosso di Montalcino

Deep red with crimson orange rim; medicinal, wood, bitter, dried roses; intense sweet berry fruit, good acid, slight rusty note, bitter orange, sweet cherry and strawberry; knew it was young so I called '09 RdM.

  • 2009 Xavier Vignon Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Anonyme

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Darker reddish violet with paler rim; brulee, modern, sweet berry, charred vanilla, red apple skin, hint of forest floor; very ripe palate, charry finish, fresh berry, meaty, red clay, Luden's cough drop; still quite young but already very complex- just needs to gain some harmony.

  • 2012 Saint Cosme Crozes-Hermitage

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Crozes-Hermitage

Dark core with bright violet rim; peppered beef, sweaty, leather, violets, vanilla, new oak; medium texture, very approachable, wild berry with some polish; simpler but tasty.

  • 2009 Delas Frères Cornas Chante-Perdrix

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Cornas

Very dark core, reddish purple rim; graham cracker, fig, red and dark fruit, no new oak; ripe fruit, modern, soft tannin, somewhat medicinal fruit, kind of rustic but not due to the tannins; ok.

  • 2009 Domaine Jean-Louis Chave St. Joseph

France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, St. Joseph

Very dark core, reddish purple rim with sediment; dark fruit, stone, dusty, pent up, tar; palate shows lots of brine and sweet olive, dense mouthfeel, snappy, tart purple fruit, acidic, sweet, some tannin; good, but not as good as previous bottles.

  • 2011 La Bastide Blanche Bandol

    France, Provence, Bandol

Dark core with light garnet rim; sweet berry, garrigue, raspberry, medicinal; tart on the palate with same medicinal note, very Southern France, bright with bigger tannin, dryish; good.

  • 2003 Château de Saint Cosme Gigondas

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Gigondas

Dark core with bricking; dark fruit, fig, raspberry, rusty, almost peppery, leather, gingerbread, sarsaparilla, dark raspberry, soft resolved tannin, very ripe; seemingly well stored I would have expected this bottle to be done but then again Louis is a magician.

  • 2006 Máté - Podere il Falconaio Brunello di Montalcino

Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

Deep crimson, see through with orange rim; nutty, autumnal, ripe cherry; sandy, intense fruit, some grip; good; thought it was Argiano.

  • 2009 I Pentri Kerres Beneventano IGT

    Italy, Campania, Beneventano IGT

Black core with thin garnet rim; dark fruit, raisin, blackberry, pumice, weedy, candy, tobacco; dark, tannic, volcanic; not much experience with this grape but it all makes sense.

Flight 2 - Hanging out with Chris on Patio (3 Notes)

Chris brought out a few wines I guess because he was tired of drinking the swill from before. He wasn't messing around.

Closing

Some awesome wines. Very young but still a joy to drink now.
