France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Very extracted, plush, ripe and at this moment painfully young wine. Lots of sweet black fruits, full body, very rich. With time nose develops notes of cotton candy. This is good, but I wouldn't touch it for at least 3-5 more years.
France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Mature, ready to drink now. Supremely elegant, finely balanced wine with high accidity, which will allow it to age. Notes of forest, a bit of barnyard, lavender, some blackberries and cherries. Medium-full body, no heaviness, high alcohol or porti-ness that might be associated with CdP. Fine development in the glass, didn't recede for 3 hours. Class was evident from the first sip. Outstanding, one of top 3 WOTN.
France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Nose starts off with a smell of syntentic glue, later some dusty black fruits appear, but nose doesn't excite. Much simpler and more agressive than Clos des Papes 2005 just before it. Not many wines though are strong enough not to lose to a direct comparison to des Papes.
France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Even though Janasse is said to be a modernist, alcohol was on the low side, wine was perfectly balanced and fine. Medium body, seemed even light for a CdP. Garrigue, some pepper, some syntetic-reductive notes that come together with very ripe berries, wine is mature now, black fruits of medium intensity. Classy, excellent, even gentle CdP.
France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Meaty, medium complexity, minimal vibrancy, with time develops a peculiar note of coconut not unlike traditional Rioja. Good overall but doesn't surprise.
Smoke, ash, certain freshness, medium body, medium accidity, fine and cushy. It had a particular feeling of class to it, although it might be the label bias. On that evening I would rate it in top 3 alongside Clos des Papes 2005 and Janasse Chaupin 2004.
France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Fully mature and at its peak or tertiary development. Complex, multilayered nose of leather, earthy dried fruits, deep and enticing. Rather soft on the palate, tannins are mellow. Probably the best of the older CdP on this evening.
France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
A bottle directly from the cellars of Mont-Redon at the very end of the tasting - seemed fading and not that interesting. Medium complexity, may be it was corked.
France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
A bottle from secondary market, must have been sold some 10+ years ago. Better than the one direclty from the cellars of the Chateau - more lively, more pronounced tertiary notes, traces of red fruits and spices.
2010 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape
