Nose of lemon and almond, and a fair hint of bread as well. The palate is a lot livelier than the last time I had this with a good dose of acidity. A bit of tart apple as well. Quite nice.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru
Not advanced at all. Clearly a product of reductive winemaking -- a big whiff of sulphur on the nose. This is in a lovely state at the moment, showing exactly what you'd expect. A slightly oily texture on the palate, but this is very dense and powerful with some moderate white peach notes. Intense acidity. Very good.
Wow, this is so intensely aromatic with tons of fresh herbs, lychee, and flowers. So intense on the palate, with a good amount of fresh green herbs (lemon grass, basil, it's almost a Thai green curry in a glass). Frickin' awesome!
Very pretty golden colour, which definitely tells you it's an aged Champagne. Nose and palate that is dominated by ripe but tart apple juice. Very lovely, but drink up!
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru
So I'm kind of torn about this one. This is a real balancing act, between its being too ripe and big and sweet, but at the same time, there's a good amount of acidity here as well, but this bottle comes in and out of focus like a detuned radio. A surprising wine, but not bad at all.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru
Textbook old Burgundy. Smells like shit (in the best possible way). The palate is surprisingly ripe and rich, with lots of ripe red berry notes. Coarse, rustic tannins. It did fade a little bit with air, so drink up soon.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru
Bright red in colour. The nose is slightly dirty but scented with tart red berries. The palate has surprisingly good structure and acidity, with a very bright cranberry tone. A very light bottle of Corton showing very well right now, though not in danger of decline anytime soon.
Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
Dark crimson colour. Slightly peppery and to be honest, I thought it was a bit cabernet-like, with some dirt and graphite, but also some higher-toned cherry aromas. Dirty, grippy tannins, but a good dose of new-world modernist polish as well.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru
A moderate whiff of dirt on the nose, as well as plenty of dark berry flavours along the lines of sweet blackcurrant. The palate is very rustic though there are good black fruit flavours to complement a big dose of iron. Perhaps a bit polished, but a great bottle of Nuits nonetheless.
Bright, if high-toned cherry nose. The nose definitely shows a bit of oak, though it doesn't strike me as particularly loud. Bright and tart red fruit on the palate, but with relatively big and coarse tannins. Good mineral quality too, though you have to get past that oak...
