Introduction

Pinot noir tasting

Flight 1 (5 Notes)

  • 2010 Domaine Billard-Gonnet Pommard 1er Cru Les Pèzerolles 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pommard 1er Cru

Drank at WWS pinot tasting. Pretty ruby color at core. Very fragrant floral nose here showing roses, violets and cherries. Cherries, strawberries, & perhaps some cranberries here too. Quite tannic belying the wine's youth. Pleasant round mouthfeel, despite the high acidity level and grippy tannins. Lots of earth & spice to go with what seemed like cherry lifesavers. Very nice complexity & excellent length too. A very young wine that needs bottle age, but good now and likely great in 5-10 years.

  • 2007 Domaine Chandon de Briailles Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Cru Ile des Vergelesses 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Cru

Drank at WWS pinot tasting. Pale red in color, no age showing. Red berries and earth on the nose. Fairly light bodied, soft & muted red cherries here. There's fruit here, but also notes of green pepper, forest, earth and dust. Still somewhat tannic, but very nice complexity and nice, long finish. I liked this wine a lot, though it was a bit on the light side.

  • 2008 Domaine Serene Pinot Noir Evenstad Reserve 90 Points

    USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley

Drank at WWS Pinot tasting. Dark ruby in color, no age showing. More full bodied than I anticipated. Lots of sweet red cherries and strawberries very much at the front here. Very new world wine in style. Some truffles and a bit of earth here, but fruit is quite dominant, and very sweet fruit! Also a bit hot. A nice wine if you prefer this style.

  • 2005 Frederic Esmonin Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Lavaux St. Jacques 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru

Drank at WWS Pinot tasting. Dark ruby color, no age showing in glass. Truffles & mushrooms quite apparent on the nose. More earth than fruit in the glass, but still sufficient red fruit/cherries here. Medium bodied, round mouthfeel, tannins still present & slightly grippy. Not a particularly elegant wine, though one gets a sense of slight silkiness on the palate. Not a particularly complex wine either--the nose showed far more complexity, and was more enjoyable than the wine itself. I did note that this wine improved dramatically over time in the glass. Decant next time

  • 1996 Dominique Laurent Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Beaumonts 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru

Drank at a WWS Pinot tasting. Pale crimson in color, some edging showing the wine's age. Generous nose of earth, mushrooms and woodsy notes. Still good red fruit here--tart sour cherries, as well as strawberries over time in the glass--as well as a very decent acidity level. Nice spiciness to go with the numerous tertiary elements in this wine--lots of earth, forest floor, briar & mushrooms. Some tannins, but mostly resolved. If I were to quibble, the wine is not particularly elegant & is somewhat lacking in finesse, but who cares! The wine was delicious, a fine example of an aged, very well-preserved red burg. I was quite surprised at how well preserved this wine was. Great stuff! Do NOT decant, and drink the wine soon. I noted that it faded while in glass--not surprising for such an old wine
