Superb Riesling tasting from Prince showing some great wines from Germany, Austria and France with a couple of token Aussies and Kiwi's.
So many of these wines were just too young for me. Having said that, potential was exhibited and there were some standouts…actually rather a lot of standouts…I'd draw parallels between the Framingham Old Vine and the two Lowensteins...the Ruprecht Saumagen Auslese was a little simple but so beautifully balanced...the donnhoff tonschieffer was drinking rather nicely and quite forward compared to the Donnhoff GG. The Frankland Estate Smith Cullam was also impressive. Overall a rather wonderful tasting.
2013 Framingham Riesling F Series Old Vine
New Zealand, South Island, Marlborough
Cheesy lees, slight stone fruit and citrus…in the mouth the wine is bone dry with cheesy lees, lacks fruit, quite dense on the palate. Hmm...the absence of fruit on the palate is a concern for me...Hmm again. Very undecided. Perhaps it is just a case of needing more time.

2013 Dönnhoff Hermannshöhle Riesling Großes Gewächs
Germany, Nahe
floral notes, slight apple pie, some minerality also cream and touches of custard apple and hints of lime on the nose. In the mouth the wine has some spritz and is rich, with a drying mid palate, orchard fruits that are a little muted. It's complex but it needs time before consumption

2013 F.X. Pichler Riesling Federspiel Loibner Burgstall
Austria, Niederösterreich, Wachau
On the nose stone fruit, honeysuckle floral notes. In the mouth the wine is spice and tangy, quite rich and broad on the palate, medium plus length. Yes, it lacks a bit of fruit on the palate but all in all it's rather nice.

2012 F.X. Pichler Riesling Federspiel Loibner Burgstall
Austria, Niederösterreich, Wachau
Pear and peach, slight wet stone…smells 'broad' if you can believe it. In the mouth there is more peach and pear, the wine is rich and dense with slight sulphur. It's tangy and long with slight non-intrusive alcohol. Pleasant

2013 Paul Blanck Riesling
France, Alsace
muted aromas of stone fruit and citrus, cream, yoghurt, leesy notes, again a 'broad' smelling wine- dense without high intensity. Hmm. Language fails me. In the mouth the wine is dry and juicy with lime and lemon juice then some sulphur and phenolic grip with medium length. Nice enough.

2013 Weingut Heymann-Löwenstein Riesling von blauem Schiefer
Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
On the nose the wine is cheesy and funky with struck match and almost herbal notes. On the palate there are initial spicy flavours, then a considerable lick of acidity followed by a positive cornucopia of fruit. Very pleasant but, perhaps, a little short.

2013 Gunderloch Nierstein Riesling Trocken

aromas of primary fruits - apple and peach - and touches of spice. In the mouth the wine is a touch sour for me and a little disjoined on the palate. Meh.

2013 Gunderloch Niersteiner Pettenthal Riesling Großes Gewächs
Germany, Rheinhessen
Dairy time - cream, yoghurt and curds - over sulphur notes followed by, on agitation, muted ginger spice and fruit. On the palate the wine is savoury and rich with slightly sour peach fruit. It's quite broad on the palate but the whole is a bit meh for me.

Austria, Niederösterreich, Kremstal
On the nose lees, wet stone, very slight kerosene, lime and a fresh herb quality. IN the mouth the wine is tangy with lime flavours, slight spice non-intrusive alcohol heat, some leesy notes (for me this means touches of curds, cheese and yoghurt sourness). Long finish. Well integrated.

2013 Dönnhoff Oberhäuser Leistenberg Riesling Kabinett
Germany, Nahe
Medium minus intensity aromas of sweet spice, stone fruit and sweaty armpits. In the mouth the wine has some spritz and is off dry with zesty acidity. Flavours of green and ripe apple…Hmm, the wine finishes a little cloying. It's out of whack at the moment, though the finish is long - it shows promise but needs time.

2012 Dr. Loosen Bernkasteler Lay Riesling Kabinett
Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
Muted stone fruit, wet clay and wet stone. On the palate there are flavours of sulphur, then a spritzy prickle on the palate…it's off dry with some juiciness and touches of grapefruit but overall it's a little disappointing.

2013 Frankland Estate Riesling Smith Cullam
Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Frankland River
lime cordial, wet stone, slight spice and floral top notes on the nose. In the mouth the wine has juicy acidity, some sulphur, lime and lemon tang with some mid palate grip. Though there is some residual sugar, which does lift the fruit, I wouldn't call it off dry. all carries long. It's rather nice and rather subtly done. good.
