Introduction

Dave was in town, and we arranged to meet over dinner. Theme was vintage-1999. Venue was at Beijing 1 at MBS - food was just ok, but luckily, most of the wines turned out to be very good! We had lots of fun catching up over this dinner.

Flight 2 (1 Note)

  • 1999 Vincent Dauvissat (René & Vincent) Chablis Grand Cru Les Preuses

France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru

Served blind. Pale, light yellow... A bit reticent at first, but with time and air, this gained more flavours and a bit of weight in the glass. It slowly opened up to scents of dainty white flowers, some honeycomb (with more time) and also developed that sense of creaminess... It was at this juncture that some guessed Puligny. This remained quite light-bodied and elegant on the palate, with a bit of salinity, lemon and chalk setting in with more time. Overall a very delicate and elegant package. Enjoyable!

  • 1999 Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Feusselottes

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru

My first Gibourg... Overall, a very soft, feminine and rather light-medium bodied drink. A bit of violets on the nose. Somehow, I found the palate to be a bit "monotonous" (or boring), although it was certainly silky and elegant. There was no "highs", just generally a pleasant drink... I believe it can still hold/age, but doubt it has the necessary stuffing to improve much furthur, so drink up...

  • 1999 Bernard Mondange Vosne-Romanée Les Chalandins

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée

This came after the Gibourg. Most certainly a more structured drink than the Gibourg - quite rustic and robust even, with a dark-red fruit profile... A few guessed an entry 1er, and we were almost all surprised when it was unveiled to be a village, and also from a maker that most (if not all) have not heard before. Bravo, definitely punching above its "village"-weight...

  • 2009 Louis Jadot Moulin-à-Vent La Roche Château des Jacques

    France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Moulin-à-Vent

Served beside the Maume, this was inserted as a ringer (blind). Very interesting - most guessed Pinot, and some, a Northern Rhone. I asked about the "weight", and verdict for most was either a very good village, or an entry 1er. This had a pretty flowery but sweet nose. On the palate, this was very well balanced, with structure and fine tannins well hidden behind the wall of dark-red, almost-crunchy fruits. It didn't have the bitter finish that the Rochegres had, so overall very enjoyable!

  • 1999 Domaine Maume Mazis-Chambertin

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru

I felt that the last bottle I had a year ago was definitely better than how this showed. Having said that, this was quite classic Maume, with that wild, animale (meaty) scent, interspaced with plums, dark-red berries. This had a sappy palate, with streaks of minerality, earth and some spice. The inclusion of stems added to its complexity. Already drinking nice, but will certainly last much longer...

  • 1999 M. Chapoutier Côte-Rôtie La Mordorée

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

This was quite amazing on both nose and palate. Scents of dried-cherries, tea, herbs, smoke. On the palate, this was so balanced and elegant, with notes of dark-cherries, spice, earth, meat, culminating in a long finish. So, so beautiful! My WOTN.

  • 1999 Bollinger Champagne La Grande Année Rosé

    France, Champagne

Wow, this definitely held its own despite being the last drink of the evening... Very nice nose of brioche, flowers, some yeast/toast. Impressive on the palate - this was at once rich, creamy but yet light-footed with great balance and acidity! Very vibrant and long. In a word, great!
