Introduction

Jamie invited me as his guest to the Chicago IWFS dinner at goosefoot. Great dinner as always for the restaurant, and some great wines to match.

Flight 1 (6 Notes)

  • 1995 Louis Latour Corton-Charlemagne

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru

I was able to try this from 3 different bottles from the same case. All had been open for several hours. The first had been double decanted. Its dark golden color made me think there would be a problem, and in fact this was very advanced and tired, but still tasty. The second bottle had not been decanted. It was similarly hued, but slightly more fresh. The third bottle also hadn't been decanted, was brighter colored and substantially better than the other two. Buttered popcorn and ripe apple everywhere with good length, this was a 90 point bottle.

  • 1985 Tertre Rôteboeuf 92 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Ripe black fruit that is evolving slowly, with lots of espresso, vanilla and dark chocolate. Rounded, persistent finish. Also tried from a 2nd bottle, which did not seem quite as pristine.

  • 1990 E. Guigal Hermitage 92 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage

Open several hours before serving with a quick double decant. Lots of maturing black fruit with great black pepper and licorice. Very good now. Tasted from several bottles, consistent notes.

  • 1990 Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage 96 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage

Intense lack and red berries throughout with excellent concentration. Great spice and black pepper and hints of roasted meat. Still very fresh for its age. Wow wine. Tried from several bottles, all consistent.

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru

    Well past its peak.

  • 1977 Taylor (Fladgate) Porto Vintage 93 Points

    Portugal, Douro, Porto

Dark berries, chocolate and some fig notes. Lighter, elegantly styled Port with an enticing weigthlessness I really enjoyed.
