Flight 1 (10 Notes)

  • 2012 Domaine Robert Groffier Gevrey-Chambertin Les Seuvrées 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin

Deeper ruby maroon, pale rim, see through; rich fruit, dark sour cherry, powdery limestone, tart, dark raspberry almost currant, subtle oak, tons of great fruit, elegant but young and powerful; richer, powerful, firm, pent up, almost medicinal dark cherry, long finish, tannin is present but not hard; easily as good as 1er Cru from most, you could tell this was a top tier producer; color and density lead me to North while others in the south, nailed it; 91+.

  • 2008 Goulée

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc

Dark core with garnet rim; bell pepper, boxwood, red currant, smoke, cedar; nice density, gripping tannin, cinnamon, lower acid but good drinkability, oak, possibly struggled to ripen a bit (region and vintage maybe); called '06 St. Estephe; good.

  • 2003 Turley Petite Syrah Hayne Vineyard

USA, California, Napa Valley, St. Helena

Midnight black core with tiny reddish violet rim; fainter nose, draws you in just like the light in the room, dark chocolate, slight jam of dark fruit, tobacco- chewing, dense and brooding, slight menthol, smoke; bigger on the palate, full, dense, sweet dark fruit, prune, sweet initially then the density kicks in, tannins are really reasonable, raspberry, glycerin, good delineation, well aged though still young; called '05 Rattlesnake Ridge Petite Sirah.

  • 2009 Domaine Denis Mortet Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin

Dull ruby to rim, good clarity; elegant nose, lots of new but good French oak, sour cherry, good density; richness, meaty red cherry, ripe but restrained, sour cherry finish, good oak, fleshy though still some tannin, a bit shorter finish; called '09 but in wrong village; good.

  • 2007 Fuligni Brunello di Montalcino

Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

See through crimson core with copper rim; floral, cedar, roses, red cherry, copper penny, rusty; tobacco, red cherry, cedar, light soft tannin, shorter finish; the less persistent tannin made me guess Brunello where as it fooled everyone as Barolo; good but still a little awkward and think more years in bottle will help.

  • 2006 Ramey Syrah Rodgers Creek Vineyard 90 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast

Dark core with dull red rim; a little salty on the nose, red fruit, black pepper, bacon fat, black olive, very aromatic; medicinal red fruit, higher alcohol, larger scaled, smoky, some tannin, iron, glycerin; a little big for my taste; fooled everyone as Northern Rhone.

  • 2003 Barossa Valley Estate Shiraz Ebenezer

Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley

Garnet core with dull rim; spicy, red fruit, autumnal, tobacco, VA, nutty, cherry, a touch of seaweed, dark cherry cordial; blueberry on the palate, rich and ripe, almost seems Italian in a way, some restraint, sappy, lots of raspberry, herbs, higher alcohol; way off on this, wine is not bad, like nose more than palate.

  • 2007 Domaine Saint-Damien Gigondas Les Souteyrades

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Gigondas

Deep crimson with dull crimson rim; tons of sappy raspberry, bitter, classic, garrigue; smoky, sappy depth, Grenache strong, sweet, youthful, ripe, raspberry pie, bitter finish; much more youthful than others I've had which attests to provenance, if that is good then I would wait longer on this, probably 5 more years.

From 375 mL bottle; see through crimson core with slight orange in rim; fig, raspberry, cherry, marzipan, faint blood orange, deep and Burgundian; good depth on palate, nice freshness, spicy, cinnamon, cayenne pepper, great balance, blood orange in finish; good, lots of fat that time will need to shed, tasty.
