  • 2000 Mathilde et Yves Gangloff Côte-Rôtie La Serene Noire 94 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

The rule of 15 nails it here. This is showing superbly right now. Incredibly fragrant and perfumed from the moment the cork was popped, with an array of bright floral notes, smoke, meat, red fruited flavours, and more saline/briny notes all coming together into a beautiful, intoxicating scent. The flavours on the palate mirror the aromatics with tremendous complexity and textural finesse, and the tannin mostly integrated. Finishes very long and saline, with olive and briny notes lingering long after each sip.

  • 1985 Château Canon 93 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Great bottle. Another HDH purchase with the fill into the bottom of the neck, cork in good shape, and this showed wonderfully (as I usually expect from '85 Canon.) Lots of rich red fruited flavours at the core, framed by gentle cedary, herbal, earthy and tobacco savoury notes, and with air it becomes deeper and more fragrant, as the fruit starts to feel sweeter and more plush. The tannin seems mostly integrated here, and the texture is incredibly finessed and graceful - another winner from Canon.

  • 1989 Château Gloria 91 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

A very elegant, leaner styled claret that still has lots of depth and complexity, but on the sort of lightweight frame I rarely ever see in Bordeaux these days. There's very little apparent tannin here, but a lot of acidity to provide structure and a sense of freshness, and very fresh dark fruited flavours tinged with more savoury earthy, leathery, and faintly herbal notes that emerge with air. It picks up depth and intensity with time in the glass, but always remains remarkably light and graceful on the palate.

  • 1999 Oddero Langhe Cabernet Sauvignon Fureste 87 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Langhe DOC

Lots of bright dark fruited flavours tinged with more savoury earthy, dried floral, and anise-like notes that make it feel quite Barolo-like. There's a fair bit of tannin here that feels slightly coarse and rustic, and a faint roasted topnote to the aromatics that I found detracted from the whole package. A really interesting wine to follow, though not always pleasurable.

  • 1999 Von Schubert Maximin Grünhäuser Abtsberg Riesling Auslese Nr. 165 91 Points

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

By the standards of most Auslese this would be fantastic, though it's a minor disappointment for a Grünhaus single fuder bottling. Lots of ripe, youthful orchard fruit tinged with faint creamy notes, smoke, and some faint herbal notes, albeit missing that overt pine cone or forestal von Schubert signature. It's very tasty, though feels a bit soft on the palate and leaves me wanting just a bit more cut and focus.
