Introduction

Four of us gathered last minute to enjoy a beautiful early summer day - sitting on the deck sipping wine, then grilling fresh veggies and steaks and having more wine. My wife joined us about midway through and had to play a fun game of catch up as well.

Flight 1 (8 Notes)

  • NV Varnier-Fanniere Champagne Grand Cru Cuvée St-Denis 89 Points

    France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru

Light gold color. Drank 2+ glasses over an hour. Fresh cut apple on the nose, light florals notes, mineral, yeast. The palate shows yeast, sour apple, citrus, chalky minerality and a dominating grapefruit pith on the mid-palate and finish.

  • 2012 Domaine Tempier Bandol Rosé 90 Points

    France, Provence, Bandol

Light orange color. Drank 2 plus glasses over 90 minutes. This took some time to open up, but when it did, it delivered nicely. Plenty of nice sea air minerals on the nose with strawberries and cherry notes. The palate is consistent offering plenty of depth and nice minerality to go with the pleasant red fruits of strawberry and cherry. this finishes fairly long and quite refreshingly. Extremely tasty. 90+pts.

  • 2012 Merry Edwards Sauvignon Blanc 92 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley

Light gold color. Drank 2 glasses over 90 minutes plus. This was certainly the best example of this wine i've had to date. Really an eye opener with amazing depth and texture on the palate. But everything comes together here, from the captivating nose with earthy grip up front along with citrus, white peach, butter, and mineral to the round and rich palate with peach, citrus, lychee and earth wrapped around a mineral finish with tangy acidity. Probably about as good as domestic SB can get.

  • 2010 Domaine William Fèvre Chablis 1er Cru Vaillons 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru

Pale green gold color. Drank 2 glasses over 90 minutes. Boldly bringing the minerality and sea breeze minerality along with citrus and earth notes, the palate follows closely with lemon, lime, stone, and a somewhat sharp finish that detracts a bit.

  • 2008 Louis Latour Meursault 1er Cru Les Genevrières 89 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru

Medium gold color. Drank 1+ glass over 90 minutes. Lemon, full bodied, slightly oily, with a backbone of minerality on the finish. there's some oak and vanilla with a certain roundness. Doesn't quite fire on all cylinders though.

  • 2012 Inglenook Zinfandel Edizione Pennino 90 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley, Rutherford

Dark red color. This bottle had been open for a bit over 48 hours. Drank 1 glass over 45 minutes. Showing better than on opening, there was a much more complete, open wine, with brighter ripe dark berry fruits, vanilla, pepper, and a touch of oak. I'd have given this 88+pts on opening. Probably warrant another 12 months of aging.

  • 2003 Long Shadows Wineries Syrah Sequel 91 Points

    USA, Washington, Columbia Valley

Very dark red/purple color. PNP, drank 2 glasses over an hour. I think this was the last bottle that anyone had left, but it displayed well and didn't really show any signs of fading or age. The savoury, meaty aromas and there with blackberry, cassis, and pepper. A nice wine that has always served us well. 91+pts.

  • 2008 Anam Cara Gewürztraminer Nicholas Estate Late Harvest 90 Points

USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Chehalem Mountains

Light gold color. PNP, drank 1 glass over 30 minutes. Very fruity, fresh, honey, apple, peach, quite sweet on the palate, with fair acids, some spice, but a bit cloying over time. Doesn't have the depth or texture though.
