France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru
Served double-blind. Flinty nose, with ripe, fresh lemon and a dollop of coconut. Round and ripe but high acid, so it presents as rather austere sour pineapple, leading into a coconutty finish. A little on the austere side.. An odd combo of ripe tropical fruit, oak, and austere acid structure that didn't really work for me. I'm not a fan of that coconut character.

Served double-blind. Earth and sour pineapple on the nose. This is softer than the first wine, showing similar ripe lemon and sour pineapple in the mouth, but with more concentration and length, with very elegant extract. Very nice, showing a level of sophistication the others couldn't get to. Clearly the class of the flight for almost everyone.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru
Served double-blind. A different nose here, with grapefruit, grass, and melon. This is big and citrusy, with good intensity and good acidity giving freshness but not especially complex. This would be a very good village wine, but it's a little undistinguished for a 1er.
Served double-blind. The nose is ripe and powerful with licorice, black cherry, and herbs -- a very Barolo-ish character. But in the mouth this is clearly Burgundy, no Nebbiolo I've yet tasted has this sort of textural sophistication with tannins that are both rich and velvety and airy at the same time. This has that wonderful savory/umami character that comes from age and that is quite different from the meaty/brett character I get in a lot of Syrah. Lovely.
Served double-blind. More primary than the previous wine and showing more red fruit, lots of fresh raspberries and red plums. In the mouth the fruit is ripe, sweet, and pure, with wonderful length, and the tannins are total silk. This is a fairly big wine and I guessed a Chambolle Charmes, which I still think was a pretty decent guess. Anyway, just gorgeous and with plenty of future upside still.
Served double-blind. Supposedly sourced from a less than reputable retailer, this was overly volatile for me (I'm pretty sensitive to that), which was a shame because this was texturally lovely.
Served double-blind. Pretty ripe berry fruit with supporting oak that on the nose suggests cinnamon to me. Supersoft, silky tannin that shows just a hint of gritty oak on the finish. Very nice wine slightly behind the others for me.
