Introduction

12 people attended, and everyone contributed a great food item to pair with the Champagne.

Flight 1 - Non-Vintage Champagne (4 Notes)

  • NV Philippe Prié Champagne Cuvée Coeur d'Ebene Brut 89 Points

    France, Champagne

A small pour at a tasting. Ok, this is a nice champagne, but I was maybe a little too positive about it last time. I had been drinking really low end champagne (as my note indicated) and I even admitted that it was lacking in complexity. I think I was just grateful to finally drink a Champagne with some class. Nonetheless, this is a solid effort, and it made a great starter wine for a champagne tasting. It seems to be a rich and toasty style. I echo my previous sentiment that I would like to revisit this in 1 or 2 years.

  • NV Bollinger Champagne Special Cuvée Brut 90 Points

    France, Champagne

A small pour at a tasting. As nice as this was, previous "vintages" have been significantly better, as my own Cellartracker notes bear out. I agree with a fellow friend/taster who commented, these used to be something special at $50. Now, they're merely "ok" at that price point. That about sums it up.

  • NV Camille Savès Champagne Grand Cru Brut Rosé 91 Points

    France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru

A small pour at a tasting. This performed above my expectation. Nice toasty funky nose. Rich and full of energy. A little iodine in the background. It seemed to have a fair amount of red fruit. Significantly better than the NV Henri Goutorbe Rose Grand cru served right before it.

  • NV Henri Goutorbe Champagne Grand Cru Brut Rosé 88 Points

    France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru

A small pour at a tasting. There is a lot to like about this Rose, but it is marred by a bitter, almost acrid finish. Everyone at the table felt the same. There were some nice qualities on the nose and palate, but my memory is fogged by that bitter finish.

Flight 2 - Not Champagne (2 Notes)

  • 2004 Roederer Estate L'Ermitage Brut 91 Points

USA, California, North Coast, Anderson Valley

Consistent with previous note. This was well-received at a tasting, especially for the price.

  • 2006 Domaine Carneros Le Rêve 89 Points

USA, California, Napa / Sonoma, Carneros

A small pour at a tasting. This was universally panned among the 12 of us. Nothing wrong with it, just nothing to get excited about. Light, slightly acidic, pear, yeast. Meh. This was blown away by the 2004 Roederer L'Ermitae served right before it. I will hold my remaining bottle for a couple years and pray.
