Introduction

This was a splendid evening of great food from Chef Nita along with sparkling conversation and some ridiculously good wines.

Flight 1 - Champagne/Whites (3 Notes)

Flight 2 - Reds (3 Notes)

  • 2008 Giuseppe Rinaldi Barolo Brunate Le Coste 96 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Medium red color. Same bottle as Chablis28, slow-ox as noted. Drank 2 glasses over several hours. This was stunningly good for such a young Barolo. This is so open and alluring on the nose and the palate. A wine with finesse and charm that doesn't clamp down and grip the palate. While still youthful in its demeanor, this shows the rose petal floral character with bright red fruits and attractive licorice notes. Seamless and fresh with a silky feel that goes on and on. Wow, I really wanna try this in about 10 years...Craig? 95+ to 96pts.

  • 1984 Dominus Estate 96 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Very dark red color with a very subtle 2-3 mm bricked margin. Slow-O in the cellar for about 3 hours and probably another 2 hours by the time we got to it. I'll be the first to admit that I am so enamoured by these older, mature, evolved, well preserved, magnificent examples of wine and winemaking regardless of where they're from that it is becoming increasingly harder to be satisfied by anything else. This bottle was from the same source as the previous bottle I had tasted last fall and was perfect condition despite a fully saturated cork and some mold on the top. I've gotten to the point where these corks don't really even phase me anymore...much anyway. I could just sit and inspire these aromas all night long. The gorgeously perfumed smell wafts about, potpourri, florals, leather, sandalwood, elegant cassis, mild funk and earthiness, dark berries and soy reduction. The palate is sophisticated, balanced, leather, funk, cassis, dark berries, subtle graphite, silky tannins that are nicely folded in and a very long finish. Medium full body with fruit and depth that belies its 31 year age. There is so much life to give; if the bottle is well stored this could can go 10 more years. 96+ to 97pts.

  • 2003 Château Léoville Poyferré 95 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Very dark purple/red color. PNP with a couple of hours of slow-O time. Drank 2 glasses over 2 hours. This was outstanding and drinking in a wonderful already. I would have expected this to need much more air, but no, it was open and beautiful. The nose offers up an intense aroma of sweet intense cassis with a dense layer of blackberry right behind that, graphite, cedar and a floral burst as well. The palate is steeped in this succulent and spellbinding core of layered pure black fruits; cassis, blackberry, kir, graphite, cedar, hints of savory and a long intense finish. Young, vibrant and lush, but restrained and alluring. I'm thrilled to see where this is at and where I think it will go over the next 10 years. 95(+)pts.
