Backstreet Wine Salon, Phoenix, AZ
Tasted Wednesday, March 7, 2007 by mattiasjansson with 1,398 views
Our monthly tasting at Backstreet. The usual suspects, plus Adam Noble and Otto Dobre visiting from out-of-town, and Chris Campbell.
Starting with the oldest
Brownish red. Cola nose. Light. Still somewhat tannic on the finish. A bit raisiny.

Some funk and spice on the nose. Earthy.

Surprisingly tight and tannic for a 22-year old wine. May need another decade. Nice fruit. Some road tar.

Great nose. Lovely balance between the fruit and the secondary characteristics.

Very, very earthy. Not my style.

Huge and inky. Tannins still a bit harsh, but the fruit is great. Very concentrated. Drinking young still.

Nice nose. Initially the mid-palate was a bit hollow, but it came together in the glass. Good balance with a nice, long finish.

Ugh. Terrible. Very earthy - and not in a good way.

Oaky nose. Round and smooth on the palate.

Drinking very young for its age. A bit hot - otherwise very nice.

Very nice nose. Vanilla. Midpalate and finish a bit monolithic, but a nice wine.

High oak. A bit disjointed, but the fruit is good. I've had better examples of this in the past.

Again a bit disappointing. Pretty good fruit profile, but too hollow to be great.

Odd wine. Tannic and bitter. Not very good.

Fragrant, aromatic nose. Very different from the other cali-cabs we had the same evening. I liked it quite a bit.

Not bad. Very young. Not as impressive as the other Whitehall Lanes I've tried lately.

Restrained, fragrant nose. Medium-bodied. Silky and in perfect balance. My first Screagle - this is obviously very young, but is already showing very nicely.

Wonderful classic Sauternes nose. Great fruit, balance. Could have had a tad more acidity.

Scott pulled out the second B.R. Cohn and Dave opened up another Mondavi
Earthy, cola. Showing older than the '85. Nice balance, but a little flat on the finish.
