Flight 1 (2 Notes)

  • 2002 Jean Boillot & Fils Volnay 1er Cru Les Fremiets 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru

Bright red colour, just beginning to brick at the rim. A bouquet of red cherry, redcurrants, warm earth, bonfire and a hint of dried mixed herbs. In the mouth, flavours of polished red cherry, raspberry and other red fruits, with a little dry, warm clay and iron. Very fresh and pure and quite ripe, almost a New World pinot feel. Smooth, silky texture, refined tannins. Seemingly lower acidity. Very pleasant drinking, perhaps a little too uncomplicated. Not yet any secondary nuance. Drink or hold.

  • 2002 Bernard Dugat-Py Gevrey-Chambertin Très Vieilles Vignes - Coeur de Roy 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin

From 50-100 year old vines. New oak 65%. Deep, dark colour. A nose of dark berries, iodine, cola, dark cherry and black liquorice. Showing a little Gevrey animale and some spicy, vanillin oak. On palate, reflecting the vintage, again a very ripe expression. Black cherries and other dark fruit wrapped around an iron core. Quite complex with hints of iodine, umami flavours, cola and grilled, smoky game meats. Also slightly medicinal (not meant as a negative descriptor). For a 13 year old wine, drinking fairly primary with real intensity. The old vines show through with the viscosity and heavy fruit weight in the mouth. There is still some bite to the tannins but they are fine grained tannins. Big structure and good length here. Drinking well now but there’s easily another 20+ years in this wine.
