Introduction

Friends in town, so we decided to drink a little bit better.

Flight 1 (12 Notes)

  • 2010 Peter Michael Chardonnay Ma Belle-Fille 90 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Knights Valley

Bright yellow green; yellow fruit, lemon, mineral?, butter, vanilla, struck match, butterscotch; fat and rich on the palate, caramel, butter, softer than nose suggests, pear and apple, round and voluptuous; was one of the few in CA as other expected this to be Burg, I went with '09 Mount Eden but felt that was being generous.

  • 1989 Chateau Musar 92 Points

    Lebanon, Bekaa Valley

Aged, sediment, rusty rim with brick at the core, see through; aged, soy, fennel, caraway, leather, red fruit, mineral; spices, hard red fruit, nice richness, brick dust, fuller, sappy, mineral, nice structure; aged on the nose but palate still pretty fresh; thought this was an aged Burgundian styled CdP as it seemed more Burgundian but looking back the strong autumnal notes that I failed to take note of and the super sappy mid palate should have led me to Musar.

  • 1982 Château La Lagune 95 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Haut-Médoc

Garnet core with large brick rim, some clarity; smoky, very mineral driven nose, currant, cranberry, cigar, bitters, aged but very intense; great structure, still great push and power, good core of fruit, cigar, richness in the mid, currant, fine tannin; did decline a bit with extended airtime but this bottle was much better than the last, very youthful for '82.

  • 2011 Château Smith Haut Lafitte 91 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

Much newer than the last wine, dark reddish garnet, slight clarity, maroon rim; vanilla, cocoa, coffee, good French oak that is yet to resolve, dark cherry; nice structure, sweet and tart darker fruit along with some red, juicy, sweet and new, blackberry and slight black currant, cherry pit, coffee, clay, fruit; nice complexity though very primary right now.

  • 2007 Azienda Bricco Rocche (Ceretto) Barolo Brunate 94 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Brick crimson core with rusty rim; intense nose, new oak is strong but intense floral and fruit is complementary, seems just slightly reductive, spicy, rose, cedar, hard dried cherry, licorice, tar; full on the palate, broad, rich, softer polished edges from the oak but strong chewy tannin at the same time, sweet red fruit, sappy and medicinal, great mid, rose, tarry finish; I really liked the balance here, so I think this should excel in the cellar; this is currently better than the Voerzio and Giacosa Barolos we had just a few nights ago.

  • 2002 Château Pavie 91 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Dark garnet core with crimson rim; cigar, leather, menthol, Bordeaux funk, round, plum, ripe cherry and currant, some green; nice richness, spicy, red fruit, some leather, firm tannin, tar, cigar, high toned finish, alcohol stands out a bit; still youthful; one of the better '02 Right Banks, others really liked though I felt it lacked some definition due to the modern winemaking.

  • 2005 Domaine Parent Pommard 1er Cru Les Rugiens 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pommard 1er Cru

Crimson core, clarity, paler rim; funk, vegetal, mushroom, peanut shells, good core of sweet cranberry and sour cherry that is very shy; firm palate, cherry pit, full and rich, Nebbiolo-esque, good stuffing, a bit mean now; very youthful and probably needs another 10 years to open up; called Pommard Epeneaux; 90+.

  • 2007 Domaine Pierre Usseglio & Fils Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée de mon Aïeul 93 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Dark core with garnet rim; raspberry pie, high toned, floral, blueberry, good density, figgy core, smoldering embers, great nose, sweet fresh and young; prickly acid was a bit awkward at first but went away, really nice core of fruit and underlying structure, sweet fruit is primary now, graham cracker, ripe but great acid, dark raspberry blue and purple fruit; delicious; this bottle was still an adolescent; nailed it; 93+.

  • 2003 Il Poggione (Proprietá Franceschi) Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Vigna Paganelli 89 Points

Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

Tons of sediment, brick rim; soy, charcoal, brown sugar, fennel, caraway, red fruit; cedar on the palate, anise, rose, cherry, tea, hard red fruit, Nebbiolo-esque but Brunello density and expansiveness, tannin, great texture; old-school style, should have known it was Il Poggione; nose was very tired but the palate was very nice; I'm sure there will be a good bit of bottle variation due to the vintage.

  • 2007 Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe Châteauneuf-du-Pape La Crau 93 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Good clarity, dark maroon core with lighter rim; raspberry, high toned and ripe, classic feel to it, sweet and tart berry fruit, bitter in the background, smoky, some Grand Marnier; strong Grenache, sweet fruit, great snap to the wine like Burgundy, tension, structure, focus, ripe but very well built; nailed it; was one of my favorites when the '07s were released, this seems to have shed a lot of its armor unveiling a beautiful and refined CdP underneath, less fat than the Mon Aieul but this should cruise if well stored.

  • 2010 Domaine Amiot Guy et Fils Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru La Maltroie Rouge 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru

Rose ruby, pale rim, see through; fresh, young, greenish note, sweet and sour fruit, floral core, good focus, dusty limestone; very nice palate, sweet fruit, sour cherry, good ripeness (ripeness for Chassagne but everyone thought this was restrained Gevrey), tension, pleasant grip; delicious, want more.

  • 2007 Domaine Henri Boillot Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Clos de la Mouchère Flawed

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru

Premox on '07?!...frustrating. Still retained some character:
Straw green; vanilla, plump, crème fraiche, lees, apple, pear, marzipan; full and plump on the palate, very sharp acid and mineral on finish, struck match, beeswax, leesy, nutty, sherry note on end kills it for me, very much out of balance; built like a bodybuilder up top and has shriveled legs.
