Flight 1 - Some younger Baroli, followed by older wines, tasted openly (8 Notes)

  • 2008 Giuseppe E Figlio Mascarello Barolo Monprivato 93 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Good aromas show complexity immediately. Dark cherries and roses are supported by spicy tobacco and a touch of icy minerality. When tasted, strawberries and cherries start things out. There is a great evolution of fruit as the wine moves across the palate. The strawberries show excellent depth, and a touch of thyme adds complexity to them. Some faint cinnamon shows as the wine transisitions into the finish. The tannins then come in with an earthy touch. They get full later, but never become overwhelming. The tannins are full, but in a good place already.

  • 2008 Giacomo Conterno Barolo Cascina Francia 87 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

The nose is primarily dark and earthy. A bit of cherry scents show, but they’re underneath stronger asphalt, charcoal, and plums. There’s an edge of raisin to the nose as well. The raisins show quickly on the palate, along with dark plums with the skins intact. The tannins start out nicely, and they get quite big on the mid palate. Cherries show on the mid palate as well, but the tannins are dominant. Later in the evening, the fruit shows more complexity in the center, but the structural elements are still overwhelming late.

  • 2007 Poderi Aldo Conterno Barolo Cicala 93 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

The nose is dark, fruity, and powerful! Blueberry aromas show great depth, and are blended with excellent chocolate cake, some violets, and a touch of nutmeg. Honestly, if poured this blind, I’d guess it was a very good Zinfandel based on the nose. So, it’s not what any of us expected to find, but I still enjoyed it. Dark blueberries and plums start things out on the palate. The tannins rise on the mid palate, but they stay even with the full fruit flavors. Later, the structure delivers a touch of bitterness. If the fruit wasn’t so ripe, this would cause some trouble. But, as it is, this edge actually serves as a good counterpoint to the strong fruit. It’s rich and round on the finish, but the structure continues to keep things interesting. Ghosts of chocolate and strawberry flavors show very late on the finish. This is a big wine, but it is interesting to experience the interplay between the fruit and structural elements.

  • 2006 Poderi Aldo Conterno Barolo Romirasco 92 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

The nose shows cherries with pits intact along with roses. Aromas of charcoal and soy sauce lurk deep underneath the fruit. Crisp apple acidity shows on contact with the palate along with raspberry flavors. Strawberry flavors rise up on the mid palate along with some leather that keeps things from being too bright and crisp. It gets a little dusty on the finish, and the strawberries show some savory notes, as if they had been drizzled with a bit of balsamic vinegar. A touch of roses appear briefly. Late, the tannins rise, and they have a big of an edge to them far out on the finish. After it has been in the glass for a while, I tasted full and enjoyable blackberry flavors on the mid palate that weren’t obvious when I first tasted it.

  • 2005 Bruno Giacosa Barolo Le Rocche del Falletto di Serralunga d'Alba 91 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Great, deep blueberry aromas rise from the glass, with some blackberries in the background. The fruit scents are supported by nutmeg, savory herbs, and some cinnamon, making it very enjoyable. Soft blueberries and cherries roll softly onto the palate upon tasting. Some herbs and spice flavors rise on the mid palate, along with growing tannins. The tannins continue to grow through the finish, while savory blueberry flavors linger underneath. A gentle hint of eucalyptus is noticeable on the finish too.

  • 2000 Giacomo Grimaldi Barolo Le Coste 92 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

This wine delivers aromas with killer depth. Blueberry, plum, nutmeg, and violet aromas spin in the glass, bringing me back for more. Great blueberry pie shows on the palate, with the crust intact. With the crust flavors, a bit of the age of this wine is evident. Full acidity comes into play towards the finish, while good blueberry flavors persist, eventually adding depth. Even tannins appear, staying in stride with the other elements of the wine. This is thoroughly enjoyable. 92+

  • 1978 Azienda Bricco Rocche (Ceretto) Barolo Prapò

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Age is showing fully in this glass, with aromas of steak and seasoned salt rising and blending with touches of chocolate and blackberries. The seasoned steak shows on the palate as well, followed by a wash of mineral character. The blackberries from the nose show up on the mid palate, and they linger nicely with the savory flavors. The tannins are well rounded, and have a touch of dusty character that works well with the savory elements mentioned earlier.

  • 2010 Francesco Rinaldi e Figli Barolo Le Brunate 87 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

This had been open for about 2 hours before tasting. Baked strawberry scents mingled with cedar notes and a touch of heat in the glass. Later in the evening, it became more savory, showing darker spices and roast beef. The palate is full of strawberries and brown earth. Full structure shows on the mid palate, reminding me of strawberry stems. The acidity is good, and some cedar flavors fade into the fruit on the mid palate. The tannins are full, and sink into the gums on the finish. The acidity and strawberry flavors linger nicely on the center of the palate.

Flight 2 - A Mystery Flight of 4 Baroli (4 Notes)

  • 1982 Giacomo Borgogno & Figli Barolo Riserva

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Plenty of fruit shows on the nose, composed of apricots, raspberries, and dark cherries. This is supported by savory scents of seared beef. Dusty character shows quickly on the palate. Shortly, cranberry flavors with good acidity appear, accompanied by some rose flavors. Later good cherry flavors blend with tobacco. A bit of chocolate is evident on the finish. The fruit, savory elements, and structure are all showing great integration at this point.

  • 1964 Giacomo Borgogno & Figli Barolo Riserva

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

This is showing lots of great aromas. Ripe strawberries are complicated and complimented by chocolate, thyme, roses, and hibiscus. This is very engaging right from the start. Great minerality and acidity are evident immediately on tasting. Savory beef mingles with cranberries and roses lightly on top of the palate. Dusty tannins rise just barely above the flavors as the wine evolves. Then, the acid rises up, bringing more red fruit and flowers. Roses are persistent from beginning to end. I can not believe this wine is 50 years old. Some of the acidity and bright fruit flavors remind me of a young wine!

  • 1952 Giacomo Borgogno & Figli Barolo Riserva

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

This wine is exploding with savory aromas including steak, seasoned salt, and shiitake mushrooms. The palate is savory as well, with good shiitake flavors complimented by saline minerality. A touch of dried cherries and roses appear on the mid palate, with the roses persisting as the fruit fades on the finish. Good acidity is still present from beginning to end.

  • 1958 Giacomo Borgogno & Figli Barolo Riserva

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

The nose is smoky, holding scents of grilled steak, roses, and a saline element as well. The savory scents become even more intense after the wine has spent more time in the glass. Juicy cherries, skins intact, start things out when tasted. Great acidity shows light character, and as it rises it brings bright floral flavors along for the ride. Grilled beef and cherries linger on the mid palate, and some cranberries settle into the edges of the mouth. Underneath it all, there’s an edge of leather that provides reserved structural support.
