Introduction

10 drinkers and one observer participated in this event. The food was great as always - cheese, meats, appetizers, flatbread, blue cheese pear avocado salad, quinoa, leg of lamb roast, scalloped potatoes, seared foie gras and flan.

  • 2001 Château Canon-la-Gaffelière 91 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

See rnr for decant time, a small pour at a tasting. Rustic, old world wine. The nose initially had a fair amount of nice funk but a lot of it blew off and became more earth. Brambly. The palate is soft, with blue-ish fruit. Dried leaves, a little mint, forest floor.

  • 1998 Château Pavie Macquin 90 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

See rnr for decant time. Palate is vegetable and a lot of earth. The palate kind of lands with a thud and doesn't do much. Bitter tannin on the finish. This still hits my level for exceptional but it seems that others have had better luck with it.

  • 1985 Château Cheval Blanc 97 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Splash decant. Sweet vanilla, spice, tobacco and earth on the nose. This wine has incredible balance and great finesse. Strawberry and raspberry. Several of us agreed that this is everything you want in an aged Bordeaux. I vacillated between 96 and 97 points.

  • 1998 Château Cheval Blanc 94 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

A 3 hour decant, had a small pour at a tasting. Blueberry on the nose. Sweet fruit, a touch of anise. Tannins are acceptable but slightly assertive. This wine is powerful and there is a lot going on. It seems to be showing its potential moe than being fully integrated and ready to go.

  • 1999 Château Angélus 90 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

A 2 hour decant. This smells fantastic. It is a darker wine, the palate is big and drying tannins. Wood and a little heat. The big fruit, heat and wood were very different from the last bottle we had a year ago.

  • 1989 Château Angélus 95 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

A short decant, had a small glass at a tasting. Classic Bordeaux nose. Well-integrated tannins, and the whole wine is just in a great place. This was a great follow-up to the 1985 Cheval Blanc, both wines are drinking very well.
