Introduction

Wine Doc came to town and rallied a few locals to get together. It was a pleasure to meet Doc and JAR and see the rest of the gang. Thanks to smartlysauced for setting up the venue- a very worthy destination. In attendance were:

Wine Doc
JAR
jcubed
M/M Wine Sparty
smartlysauced
Domino & I

Flight 1 (11 Notes)

All were opened and casually enjoyed throughout the course of the evening. Listed in the order I visited them. My note shows the Latour Corton Grancy was the 2002, but I must have made a mistake when noting the vintage.

  • NV Roger Pouillon et Fils Champagne Premier Cru Brut Soléra 92 Points

    France, Champagne, Champagne Premier Cru

Opens with aromas of toasted nuts with pear and wet stone as well. Hints of candied ginger with air. Apple, pear and almond flavors on the palate, picking up citrus and honeysuckle qualities. Fine, lingering bead. Worth seeking out. Thanks, smartlysauced. 92+ pts.

  • 2005 Domaine William Fèvre Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru

Nearly identical to the previous bottle I opened. Youthful yellow color. Pear, mineral, apple and salty/saline aromas. Has a nice intensity on the palate, with flavors of apple and mineral, a nice toasted quaity, with a long finish ending with a wet stone note.

  • 2011 Louis Latour Corton-Charlemagne 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru

Another courtesy of JAR, this was textbook young Corton Charlie on the nose with an explosive bouquet of mineral and limestone with a terrific lemon overtone. I could have smelled this all night. The citrus and stone carry through on the palate, with bright acidity and a long finish. Very bright and focused at this young stage. Thanks for sharing, JAR.

  • 2005 M. Chapoutier Ermitage Blanc Le Méal 94 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage

Courtesy of Wine Doc, and showing surprisingly well already in my opinion. Melon and subtle citrus notes with lanolin and beeswax undertones. Full-bodied and rich on the palate with an abundance of fruit. Balanced and shows good length on the palate and finish.

  • 1996 M. Chapoutier Côte-Rôtie La Mordorée 90 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

Our last of eight bottles which has long been a favorite of Domino's, this displayed notes of pepper and currants. There's a nice floral undertone, but gone is the meaty/bacon fat component. Fully-integrated on the palate, with red fruit and spice cake. Shows just a bit short on the midpalate and finish to be on par with the better bottles we've enjoyed over the years.

  • 2006 Domaine Robert Groffier Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Hauts-Doix 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru

Courtesy of Wine Sparty, this was a stunner. Very pure and elegant, with notes of cherry and wild flowers, with just a hint of wet earth underneath. Very well-balanced, showing red fruit, cherry, earth, spice and rose water on the palate. Wonderful silky texture, gliding across the palate and lingering on the finish. I adore Groffier's Chambolles and this shows why. Gorgeous. Enjoyable now and for many years to come. 93-94 pts.
