18 of us at Raku for sushi and champagne. My clear Wine of the Night was the 1999 Billecart Salmon Nicholas Francois. There were several other good bottles as well.
Fairly yeasty with good champagne power. Again, white flowers. The finish is a bit tart. To me, this seems more like a regular Brut than an extra Brut.
A smallish glass at a tasting. Ok, this is not champagne but it is very well done. Different. It seemed slightly sweet at first, but as I drank it the sweetness seemed to disappear. The nose is funky and overall it seems rather Old World. Green fruit on the finish. I would seek this out.
A small glass at a tasting. Definite champagne style, maybe a little golden fruit suggests it's California origin. Good depth even at this young age. This might be better than the 2004.
Drank a full glass at a tasting, because it was quite nice. Restrained power and good balance. A fair amount of toast. Lovely white flowers. I like the combination of yeast/toast with the acidity. Significantly better than 2 years ago, and I'll probably save mine for another 2 years.
Wow, this is the best champagne I've had in a while, and it seemed better than the bottle we had a year ago that was also really good. Drank a glass over about an hour. Powerful, very toasty. Very deep and complex. Good white fruit. I hope that toastiness doesn't increase or it might get distracting.
A small glass at a tasting. I was so looking forward to this, and was incredibly dissapointed. This did not have any semblance of the depth you would find in a champagne of this quality. Lots of citrus/lemon that turns towards medicinal on the finish. Lean and austere. I hope this turns the corner, but I'm not buying any to find out. 80 or less.
A small pour at a tasting. Overall, not that interesting. Lots of citrus, good minerality, but nothing to get excited about. Also, it was served after some pretty good vintage champagne, so it may have suffered due to that.
A glass at a tasting. This is incredibly complex for only being 12 years old. Burnt caramel, orange peel, honey, and a LOT of spice. I think this is the best 2003 Sauternes I've had so far. 93+.
A small pour at a tasting. This BdB had a richness that I don't usually find in pure Blanc. Yet it also seemed well balanced. I may have to seek this out.
A small pour but then ended up finishing the bottle because it was sitting in front of me, so probably a normal sized glass altogether. This was not ponderous at all, but well-balanced, elegant and good quality champagne.
A small pour at a tasting. I didn't take a good note, but it had good true champagne character. It seemed a bit doughy. Middle of the road stylistically.
