Introduction

For the Thanksgiving gathering we enjoy the party which is always accompanied by some great wines... The tradition is not only the obligatory Turkey but also at least one bottle of my favorite US wine 'Ridge Monte Bello', which was for everyone the WOTN... Cheers!

Flight 1 - Aperitif (2 Notes)

  • 2003 Egly-Ouriet Champagne Grand Cru Brut Millésimé 93 Points

    France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru

Golden color. Nose of baked apples, ripe fruit and caramel. Subtle fleur de sell notes, mouth filling, rich and very long. Now in a great drinking window with a decade of a top-notch drinking ahead . Constantly a great Champagne. Dégorge 10/2010

  • 2002 Bollinger Champagne R.D. Extra Brut 91 Points

    France, Champagne

Light golden in color. Fresh granny smith apples, white flowers and fresh white bread nose. All surprisingly light and quite high on the acidity. I am missing the complexity and the structure of in this wine. Maybe still too young...let's hope so as there are still a few bottles in the cellar. In the current phase disappointing!

    Bottle disgorged: 24/06/2014

Flight 2 - Entry flight... (2 Notes)

  • 2004 Jonata Winery El Desafio de Jonata 92 Points

USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Ynez Valley

Dark color. Nose of black cherry marmalade, chocolate and ripe currant (very sexy!). Quite full bodied but not over the top, sweet, smooth tannins and very good structure. Now in a perfect drinking window. Drink now as I do not expect more joy to come with additional cellaring.

  • 2003 Kapcsándy Family Winery Cabernet Sauvignon State Lane Vineyard 94 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley, Yountville

Dark in color. Nose of leather, dark fruit and black currant. Tannins are not yet fully integrated, starts to open up after 3 hours. Very long finish and quite classical in style. More to come in 5 years. Very nice inaugural vintage of Kapcsandy. Drink now - 2030+

Flight 3 - The highlights... (2 Notes)

  • 2008 Ridge Monte Bello 96 Points

    USA, California, Santa Cruz Mountains

Dark in color. Nose of leather, exotic wood, espresso, currant and also hints of red berries. Already very approachable with silky tannins. Multilayered and very long. This is superb Monte Bello out of a difficult vintage. Clearly the WOTN. The wine has for sure a long and brilliant future ahead....Drink now -2035+

  • 2008 Larkmead Vineyards LMV Salon 92 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Purple in color. Nose of coffee, black licorice and dark sweet berries. Still quite austere and tannic. Full bodied but not overdone. Still too young and a likely blockbuster in 5-10 years. Hold off as the 2-hour decant did not help to smoothen the tannins out. Potential for 93-95pts is here. Drink 2018-2030
