Friday after Thanksgiving (FAT) - Part 1 - Burgundy 2006

Introduction

A stunning lineup of 2006 Burgundy. This is the first half of the party's lineup, opened alongside 30+ vintages of Penfold's Grange, which I will consolidate separately. Cory's generosity was once again tremendous and incredibly memorable. Most of the Burgundy was finished in the course of the evening. Perhaps 1/3 weren't finished and had corks re-inserted overnight. I was able to revisit many of those the next day before and during lunch. Truly one of the great tastings of the year. The notes are not shown in the sequence tasted, but alphabetically by producer, in the order of the list providing of wines opened.

Flight 1 (56 Notes)

  • 2006 Domaine Leflaive Bâtard-Montrachet Flawed

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru

From 3L in great condition. Dark color, far more advanced than it should have been even for the 2006 vintage. Revisited several times through the evening with consistent results. The BBM was wonderful.

  • 2006 Domaine Leflaive Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru

From 3L. Ripe apple, some peach, roasted nuts, and orange peel. Very good concentration, good depth, moderate acidity. No upside in cellaring this vintage longer, particularly given that the Batard also served was very advanced.

  • 2006 Pierre Damoy Chapelle-Chambertin 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru

Small taste, brief note. Open approx 6:30 then tasted several hours later. Black fruit with roasted meat character. Hint of liqueur on finish. Forward, balanced, good now, with moderate length and nuance. Tasted again the 2nd day, it came across slightly longer and more interesting.

  • 2006 Claude Dugat Charmes-Chambertin 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru

Small taste, brief note. Lots of black fruit, meaty spice aromas along with floral hints. Same flavor profile, big, chewy and broad on palate. Very good now, I think this is just entering its peak drinking window. This had also been open a few hours before i tasted, and was better when revisited a few hours after that.

  • 2006 Pierre Damoy Chambertin 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin Grand Cru

Small taste, brief note. Open approx 6:30, tasted several hours later. Ripe black and blue fruit with dark chocolate and espresso, but also a few rough edges on finish. I slightly preferred the Chapelle-Chambertin, but when both were retasted the 2nd day, this Chambertin came across as meatier, also with more fruit and stuffing. This is a 2006 that needs more cellar time.

  • 2006 Claude Dugat Griotte-Chambertin 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru

Ripe black and red cherry with very good spice. Softer and elegant tannins, overall very good balance. Moderate weight. A rare vintage where I prefer Dugat's Charmes over Griotte.

  • 2006 Claude Dugat Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Lavaux St. Jacques 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru

Lots of ripe black fruit, plenty of roasted meat character and background spice. The most noticeably structured of the 3 Claude Dugat 2006s tasted, but still open and best for medium-term consumption. Consistent on the 2nd day.

  • 2006 Domaine Dujac Clos de la Roche 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru

Open approx 2 hours before tasting. Black, red and blue berries throughout with great spice and some meaty character. Some liqueur hints to start made me think this might one of the 2006s with overripe notes, but that quickly disappeared in the long finish. Excellent now, with upside from here.

  • 2006 Domaine Fourrier Griotte-Chambertin Vieille Vigne 95 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru

Lots of red cherry and berry. Elegant background spice. Incredible pure fruit for the vintage, coming across as ripe but very balanced. Textures dance on your tongue. Tasted several times over several hours, and this kept getting better.

  • 2006 Domaine Leroy Musigny 97 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Musigny Grand Cru

Small tasting, brief note. Another blockbuster. Lots of red and black cherry on nose and palate with background spice. Outstanding velvety textures from the start to middle, with lots of power emerging middle to long, long finish. Wow.

  • 2006 Domaine Leroy Chambertin 97 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin Grand Cru

Small taste. Open an hour before tasting. Wow, what a monumental wine in development. Huge spicebox here, with aromas and flavors of intense wild blueberry and blackberry. Equally intense flavors. If served blind this would easily be identified as from Gevrey with lots of smoked meat, animale character, but also easily identified as Leroy with spice and perfume notes. Some found the concentration too "in your face" and didn't enjoy this wine as much as I did tonight. Certainly in my top 3 wines of the night, probably my favorite overall.

  • 2006 Domaine Leroy Romanée St. Vivant 96 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Romanée St. Vivant Grand Cru

Small taste, brief note. Open an hour before tasting. Ripe red fruit, huge spice. Prototypical Vosne Grand Cru, truly alluring in every way. Drinking beautifully already.

    Corked.

  • 2006 Domaine Leroy Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Charmes 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru

Tasting, brief note. Ripe red berry aromas and flavors with baking spice throughout. Faint hint of liqueur that also softens on an elegant finish. Very fun.

  • 2006 Domaine Leroy Latricières-Chambertin 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Latricières-Chambertin Grand Cru

Tasting, brief note. Slightly lighter than I would have thought from Gevrey 2006 Grand Cru, but great red berries throughout with meaty spice and an expanding finish. Tasted a couple of times over several hours, and this seemed to get get longer and even more refined.

Post a Comment / Do you find this review helpful? Yes - No / Report Issue

  • 2006 Domaine Leroy Clos de la Roche 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru

Small taste, brief note. Perfumed start with gobs of red berry start-to-finish. Some earth on finish with dried herbs. Great concentration. My only complaint (in the context of this amazing tasting that included 10 bottles of Leroy 2006) is that it tasted much more like "Leroy" and very Vosne-like, and not particularly showing Clos de la Roche or Morey character to me.

  • 2006 Domaine Leroy Clos Vougeot

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

Small taste, brief note. Black and red fruit, also showing lots of Vosne styled spice. Burly and firmly structured from middle to finish. Needs more time.

  • 2006 Domaine Leroy Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Beaux Monts 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru

Small taste, brief note. Much like the RSV tasted earlier, but everything on a slightly smaller scale. Very charming and enticing, even if still a little firm right now. Best to cellar at least a few more years.

  • 2006 Domaine Leroy Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Boudots 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru

Tasting, brief note. Open a couple of hours before tasting. Black berries on nose and palate with a meaty texture. I normally expect Leroy's Boudots to be incredibly Vosne-like, but this came across as more firm and dense with NSG character throughout.

  • 2006 Joseph Drouhin Musigny 95 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Musigny Grand Cru

Small taste, brief note. Starts of elegant and alluring, finishes with great power and concentration. Red fruit with fresh herbs everywhere. Even better than another bottle from a few months ago from a different source.

  • 2006 Alain Hudelot-Noëllat Richebourg 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Richebourg Grand Cru

Tasting, brief note. Ripe, but slightly rough around the edges with moderate spice for Richebourg. Similar when retasted the 2nd day.

  • 2006 Louis Jadot Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Amoureuses 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru

Small taste, brief note. Tasted approx 2 hours after opened. All red fruit, background spice. Combined elegance and textured beautifully with power on finish. Moderate length. With hindsight, this came across very much like the Musigny did on day 2.

  • 2006 Louis Jadot Musigny 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Musigny Grand Cru

First tasted after opened approx 2 hours and this showed moderate red fruit with very good spice and overall good textures. What a difference a day makes. Red fruit expanded, spice enhanced and textures more nuanced on Day 2. Patience required.

  • 2006 Louis Jadot Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Domaine Louis Jadot

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru

Small taste, brief note. Tasted approx 2 hours after opening. Big and burly with lots of concentration and muscle, even if not very accessible right now. One of the few Jadot bottles that I didn't get to try the 2nd day, all the others improved substantially with more time open, so I have faith in this wine's potential going forward.

  • 2006 Louis Jadot Richebourg

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Richebourg Grand Cru

Small taste, brief note. Ripe red fruit with classically Vosne spice. Good density. Came across as both ripe and firm at the same time, making me think this also needs more time in the cellar. I didn't retaste on the 2nd day, but most of the Jadot I did retaste softened nicely and improved considerably.

  • 2006 Louis Jadot Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos St. Jacques Domaine Louis Jadot 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru

Dense, black fruit on nose and palate with an emerging earthiness. Came across as rugged and firm when tasted after open approx 2 hours, but more balanced and refined the 2nd day. Worth cellaring further.

  • 2006 Domaine Michel Lafarge Volnay 1er Cru Les Caillerets 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru

Small tasting, brief note. Open a few hours before tasting. Ripe red and black cherry, but firm and backward for 2006. Good density, good potential, but certainly needs more cellar time.

  • 2006 Domaine des Comtes Lafon Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Chênes 89 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru

Small taste, brief note. Red cherry and berry flavors and aromas come across as very ripe with moderate floral and spice support. Forward and very good now and probably best over the next 5-8 years.

  • 2006 Domaine Francois Lamarche La Grande Rue

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, La Grande Rue Grand Cru

Tasting, brief note. Open a couple of hours before tasting, then tasted again a few hours later. This wine probably really needed more time and/or cellar time. i found it slightly hard and backward, even rough around the edges. Not close to the fun I recall from when tried shortly after release, but with the concentration that makes me hopeful that this will evolve into something very enjoyable.

  • 2006 Domaine Dominique Mugneret Romanée St. Vivant 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Romanée St. Vivant Grand Cru

Slightly floral with firm red fruit when first tasted a couple of hours after opened. Slightly angular at the time, but then re-tasted the next day, when it transformed into a wine with ripe red berries, great spice and nicely harmonious textures. 90 points the 1st day, 93 the 2nd day. Others also liked this much more the 2nd day.

  • 2006 Domaine Méo-Camuzet Richebourg 95 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Richebourg Grand Cru

Small taste, brief note. Open approx an hour before tasted. Huge black berries throughout with baking spice and dark chocolate. Excellent density and length. Starts a bit ripe, but otherwise impeccable balance. Another of tonight's "top 10" wines. Already very super tasty.

Post a Comment / Do you find this review helpful? Yes - No / Report Issue

  • 2006 Domaine Méo-Camuzet Clos Vougeot 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

Small taste, brief note. On the ripe side vs many other, lots of fleshy fruit, baking spice. At first I still found hints of new oak, but that dissipated when re-tasted the 2nd day. Consistent with prior bottles tasted.

Post a Comment / Do you find this review helpful? Yes - No / Report Issue

  • 2006 Domaine Méo-Camuzet Corton-Clos Rognet

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru

Lots of spice start-to-finish, but rugged structure and plenty of new oak when first tasted (open a few hours). Much more balanced when re-tasted the 2nd day, while still firm, but with the concentration that makes me confident it will nicely benefit more cellar time.

  • 2006 Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Amoureuses 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru

Small taste, brief note. Open approx 2 hours before tasted. Red cherry and berry with great spice, great textures, moderate depth. Very good now, with the structure and concentration to continue to age gracefully.

Post a Comment / Do you find this review helpful? Yes - No / Report Issue

  • 2006 Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier Musigny 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Musigny Grand Cru

Tasted an hour+ after opened and found muted red fruit and spice, both in the background vs the wine's structure. Seemed very un-2006. This must not have been a hit because (shockingly) there was wine left overnight. This totally opened and transformed the 2nd day. Fruit was more ripe, spice more savory, textures more nuanced. Expanding, intriguing finish. Hold to 2020 or much later.

  • 2006 Domaine Ponsot Clos de la Roche Vieilles Vignes

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru

Open several hours when tasted. Very firm, very backward, seemingly lean with little forthcoming pleasure. Similar to the Clos St Denis, both of which were somewhat disappointing tonight, but both should benefit from lots more cellar time.

  • 2006 Domaine Ponsot Clos St. Denis Très Vieilles Vignes

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos St. Denis Grand Cru

Also open several hours when tasted. Also very firm and backward, showing lean red cherry without much pleasure. Similar to the Clos de la Roche, both of which were somewhat disappointing tonight, but both should easily benefit from lots more cellar time.

  • 2006 Domaine Ponsot Griotte-Chambertin 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru

Open several hours when first tasted. Black cherry and berry with some baking spice. Moderate intensity. Far more accessible (and more enjoyment) than the Clos de la Roche or Clos St Denis, but without the same concentration/ potential as those two.

  • 2006 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti La Tâche 97 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, La Tâche Grand Cru

Small taste, brief note. First wine of the night. Huge cross-section of ripe red fruit with alluring spicebox to start. Starts ripe and lush on palate, but more complex textural elements emerge within a few seconds that are equally engaging, and bring greater overall balance. Sensational now, but this will be even better in a decade, and drink wonderfully for 30ish more years.

  • 2006 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Richebourg 95 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Richebourg Grand Cru

Small taste, brief note. Much like the LT just tasted, but slightly bigger start and less textured or nuanced from there. Nicely floral with lots of red and black cherry. I couldn't decide if I liked this or RSV more.

  • 2006 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Romanée St. Vivant 95 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Romanée St. Vivant Grand Cru

Small taste, brief note. Aromatically alluring with perfume, Asian five spice and red berries. More firm and slightly backward on palate, but this isn't hiding its great potential. I couldn't decide if I preferred this vs the Richebourg.

  • 2006 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Grands-Echezeaux 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Grands-Echezeaux Grand Cru

Small taste, brief note. Open an hour before tasting. The most forward and "ready" of the 4 DRCs tasted tonight. Dominated by great baking spice aromas and flavors with ripe red cherry and berry. Less powerful than the others, but great harmony already now.

  • 2006 Emmanuel Rouget Echezeaux

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru

Open 2 hours when first tasted. Lush and fat red fruit that is still so primary and comes across as jammy. Moderate spice at best. Elegant tannins, but clearly front-and-center. New oak still protrudes a bit. This needs lots of time and was frankly not even close to the quality of the Cros Parantoux. Tasted again near the end of the evening with similar results.

  • 2006 Emmanuel Rouget Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Beaumonts 89 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru

Small taste, brief note. Open 2-3 hours when tasted. Floral start with black fruit, dark chocolate, baking spice aromas. Similar flavors, also a bit ripe and jammy.

  • 2006 Emmanuel Rouget Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Cros Parantoux 95 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru

Small taste, brief note. A huge step up vs Echezeaux. Black and blue fruit with floral charm and incredible savory spice. Perhaps not so classically "Vosne" in its spice element, but this has so much of everything great and demonstrates Cros Parantoux doing really well in riper vintages. Great depth throughout. Revisited near the end of the evening and it might have even been better. Easily in my "top 10" tonight, possibly in my "top 5."

  • 2006 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Chambertin 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin Grand Cru

Small taste, brief note. Ripe black and powerful fruit to start with roasted meat notes and a liqueur hint. Moderate depth in the middle, particularly for Rousseau Chambertin. Barely evolved, I'd think this much better in another decade or later.

  • 2006 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Chambertin-Clos de Bèze 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru

Small taste, brief note. Black fruit with savory spice and sauvage hints. Far more hedonistic vs Chambertin, certainly more pleasure today, but not the same degree of concentration or long-term potential. Just entering its peak drinking window.

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru

Small taste, brief note. Open 2+ hours when tasted. Ripe black fruit, smoked meat notes, very good, meaty spice. Very good textures and balance here, even if still slightly on the firm side for right now.

Small taste, brief note. Open approx 3 hours when tasted. Black cherry, slightly floral, some smoked sausage hints. Ripe but balanced overall. Good now, but upside from here, so I'd cellar further. I preferred this vs Charmes-Chambertin and Mazis-Chambertin.
