Lots of green and yellow apple with some toasty aromas. Slightly more of that toast/ bread character on the palate with the same fruit flavors. Very good textures, moderate intensity. Consistent with prior times I've tasted.

Small glass, brief note. No shrinking violet here. Ripe and powerful baked apple, ripe melon aromas with some baking spice hints. Similar on palate with the weight and textural nuance to retain balance despite the ripeness and hints of heat. Good now.

Beautifully floral. Lots of intense apple, some strawberry in background. Great textures, very tasty already, but even more cellarworthy.

Red and black cherry throughout with background spice, excellent textures. grand Cru quality concentration. Expanding finish. Needs more cellar time.

Great underlying fruit, but I found this far more advanced vs other bottles tasted recently.

Small glass, brief note. black fruit start-to-finish. Lots of roast game, braised meat spice and barnyard that I find a little too pronounced.

Popped and poured. Starts out ripe and more lush than I expect from Grand Cru Chablis. Peach start transitions to Meyer lemon and lemon peel by the finish, where mineral driven textures start to emerge, where terroir really starts to emerge. Should drink well for another decade.

Started with lush, ripe and powerful orchard fruit aromas, but flavors less exciting, and a slightly odd, bitter finish. Didn't change for the better with more time in glass - nose just started seeming older and palate shortened and flattened. Not nearly as interesting as another bottle (from same case?) from a few months ago, so I thought this an off bottle, while others just thought it showing its age.

Small taste, brief note. Lemon, lemon peel throughout with steely nature. Somewhat lush start with a slightly hollow middle, then once again a bigger finish. Good underlying energy.

Wonderful red cherry, Asian 5 spice aromas. Less exciting flavors with slightly backward fruit and firm structure. 93 point nose, 87 point palate. Give this time

Popped, decanted and poured. Tasted over the next hours. Aromatic start much like the Clos du Château, but with greater intensity, great floral notes and a hint more new oak. Lots of red cherry and berry flavors with same spice intensity. Seamless from start-to-finish, very long, very well textured. Not close to its peak drinking window yet, this has lots of upside from here.

Tasted double blind. While I thought it slightly older due to the mushroom character, I correctly identified the Vosne spice and red fruit here. Clearly very ripe fruit, but with great concentration and excellent harmony fruit/ earth/ spice/ structure.

Musty start, which aromatically never dissipated. Slightly tired flavors, without the lean finesse and energy of the best 2001s that I'd be expecting in this Leroy. Certainly drinkable (87 points?) but not Leroy quality.

Forward fruit start, mostly apple, slightly tropical. Spice hints throughout. Palate also starts ripe and forward, finishes with more classic styling, nice textures. Good now, while also medium-term cellarworthy.

Nicely floral start also showing ripe apple aromas and some peach hints. Similar start on palate, but structure comes through quickly to provide great texture and balance. Very good now and for the medium term.

A wine I've enjoyed many times in the non-luminous bottle. Not a personal fav today, but I understand it was just shipped to Chicago this week. Very good fruit, but far too steely for DP Rose with sweet fruit sneaking through in middle and finish.

Open one hour before serving. Tasted single blind alongside the Bouchard. Very ripe black and red berries throughout with sweet baking spice and plenty of sous bois, more than I would expect at this age. Good intensity and density with all structure fully resolved. I preferred the Bouchard, while some others disagreed.

Open one hour before serving. Tasted single blind alongside the Montille (I believe Bouchard swapped barrels with Montille to make this wine). Bright red cherry and berry with intense spice. Good weight and density with a crunchy mineral texture I really enjoyed. I definitely preferred this over Montille, while a few others disagreed. Enough for one last glass remained for approx 8-10 hours, at which point it might have been better vs when first tasted.

Alluring aromas of mature red fruit with great spice and earth. 96 point nose. Charming palate that comes across slightly more mature vs nose, but incredibly delicate and elegant. This is a wine to sip and savor for hours.

Cross-section of red, black and blue berries throughout. This clearly need time in bottle, coming across as slightly disjointed today. 88-90 point potential.

Ripe apple and pear with some toasty spice. Good concentration, but this isn't a wine to cellar for much longer. Best now and for the next few years.

Popped and poured. Very nice nose shows lots of reduced mushroom with faint hints of black fruit. Less interesting flavors with plenty of earth, hints of mature fruit and some orange peel. Good for a brief period when first poured in glass.

Small taste, brief note.Black fruit with some toasty spice aromas. Black fruit flavors again, still nicely fresh, with firm tannins and modest nuance. Brought by another auction attendee today. I have no idea who this producer might be.

Flowers from a summer garden with ripe peach throughout. Ripe fruit provides a great start along with nice acidity, then slightly duller in the middle. I think this will fill out with more time in cellar.

Tart red cherry and berry on nose and palate with subtle vosne-styled spice. Slightly more mature than I'd expect for top 2001 1er. Good overall, but acid and tannins on finish detract from the overall balance.

Red and black cherry with some toasty spice. Very elegant and well textured, with good density coming through as well. Nicely balanced for now.

Small glass, brief note. Tropical fruit aromas and flavors, energized by a burst of acidity that brightens it up completely. There is a hint of sweet fruit re-emerging on the end that slightly detracted from the finish.

Small glass, brief note. Ripe and powerful black currant and cassis with espresso and dark chocolate. Same on palate with a bit more spice. Very tasty and balanced right now, even if not much cmplexity.

Not the best version of this wine I have had. Lots of orchard fruit some some slightly sweet notes in the middle that completely/ nicely vanished by the end. I've preferred other disgorgements of this wine before.

Popped, decanted and poured. Tasted double blind, I thought this Grand Cru Burgundy. Very ripe orchard fruit with intense concentration. Spice throughout still showing a bit of new oak, but this is really pleasurable right now.

1990 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Mazy-Chambertin 92 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru
(12/10/2015)
Ripe black and red cherry on nose and palate, moderately mature, with lots of roasted game character and some woodsy spice. Not as concentrated as many 1990s, this emphasizes elegance and finesse over power.

Alluring aromas show lots of perfume, great sweet spice and maturing red cherry and berry. Less exciting flavors mostly showcase the mature red fruit's ripeness.

Apple and pear throughout. New oak comes through now, so give this a few years in cellar. Fat starts, softens quickly. Moderate weight and acidity in middle, with nice mineral textures on finish.
