Introduction

A great lineup of CDP's. The overall theme here is that the older wines are SO MUCH better than the youngsters, with the exception of the 2007 Boursan which just rocked.

Flight 1 - Whites (2 Notes)

Wow, the Piper-Heidsieck was really impressive.

  • 2006 Piper-Heidsieck Champagne Brut Millésimé 92 Points

    France, Champagne

Consumed a glass over about 30 minutes. The palate here is deep and almost brooding. Tangy apple, wild yeast, great energy. This performed above my expectation.

  • 2009 Rhys Chardonnay Alpine Vineyard 92 Points

    USA, California, Santa Cruz Mountains

Consumed a glass over 45 minutes. This was much bigger and less resolved than the 2010 we had a month ago. It was more in the Kistler vein today, but with some nice complexity. I will take the advice on Rhy's website and hold off opening my bottles for a while.

Flight 2 - CDP (8 Notes)

  • 1995 Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape 95 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Slow o'd for 2 hours. Drank a glass over an hour. Very floral. Great complexity. This had a lot of earth, tar and garrigue. It started out on the lighter side of medium-bodied. Sitting in the glass, it seemed to take on weight with darker fruit, more tar and soy. By the time I had finished it, was on the fuller side of medium-bodied. It was fun to watch this wine change. This was the best CDP I’ve had so far in my life.

  • 2000 Le Clos du Caillou Châteauneuf-du-Pape Domaine du Caillou Les Quartz 94 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Consistent with previous notes. Great old chateauneuf.

  • 2000 Domaine Charvin Châteauneuf-du-Pape 91 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

30 minute decant, drank a glass over about an hour. This drank younger than I expected. I think a 1 or 2 hour decant would have been better. Lighter-bodied, more Burgundy than CDP, nice red fruit, cherry, raspberry. Tannins were more present than anticipated.

  • 2001 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape 92 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Pop and pour, slow o'd for a short time. This really needed a decant. It had secondary/tertiary flavors, but also quite hot and liqueur-ish. If you held this for a few more years, you'll be rewarded.

  • 2005 Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape 94 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

3 hour decant. Although this drinks on the young side, it is not hot, and does not have the brutish power that many CDP's possess. Great balance and complexity. It performed well tonight and may turn into something magical. Tasted alongside the 1995, it was our consensus that this will be the better wine someday. But not today.

  • 2005 Domaine Charvin Châteauneuf-du-Pape 90 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

3 hour slow O, really it needed a decant or save for 5+ years. A pretty wine to drink today, quite youthful, just starting to take on secondary flavors.

  • 2007 Domaine Charvin Châteauneuf-du-Pape 90 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Decanted 1 hour, needed a longer decant or ideally more cellar time. I felt it was in about the same place as the 2005 Charvin that was only slow-o'd. The palate is quite bold right now.

  • 2007 Domaine Bois de Boursan Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée des Félix 94 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

90 minute decant. This was a rockstar wine tonight. Wow, everything you look for in a CDP. Lots of funk, garrigue, earth, tar, cassis and darker fruit. It did seem like it was pushing the envelope a bit, but not over the top.
