Introduction

Fun night, great food, very good wines.

Flight 1 (11 Notes)

  • NV Veuve Doussot Champagne Brut Grande Cuvée 91 Points

    France, Champagne

Light gold color. Drank 1 glass over 20-30 minutes next to the '10 cuvee Ernestine. I didn't recall having this before, but I had. I like the N/V better myself. I enjoyed the level of yeast and brioche here, toasted, orchard fruit, nice acid, mineral driven and some red fruit hints. This was very good on the palate and nose.

  • 2010 Veuve Doussot Champagne Ernestine Millesime 90 Points

    France, Champagne

Light gold color. Drank 1 glass over 30 minutes next to the N/V Grande Brut. This was a bit lighter, a touch more sweetness, apple, yeast, but not the level of brioche and toast, a bit spicier on the back end, a bit lighter overall, some hints of red berries, orange cream finish. Less mineral driven. 90(+)pts.

  • NV Piper-Heidsieck Champagne Cuvée Brut 89 Points

    France, Champagne

Pale gold color. From magnum. Drank 2 glasses over 30 minutes, about 4 hours apart. I thought this was pretty typical myself. Good minerality, ample yeast, maybe less fruit driven than some bottles, but good typicity. 89+pts.

  • NV Pol Roger Champagne Brut Réserve 90 Points

    France, Champagne

Light gold color. Drank 1 glass over 30 minutes. Very fine bead, but not very energetic bead. The palate is pear, yeast, mineral, and a lighter than typical toast. This was similar to the last bottle I had, but not up to some recent bottles. The lack of energy on the bead is interesting. 90+pts.

  • 2009 Leeuwin Estate Chardonnay Art Series 92 Points

Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Margaret River

Light-medium gold color. PNP, drank 1 glass over an hour plus. Very good nose with white fruits, white nectarine, melon, cedar, lemon. The palate is medium bodied, toasted oak initially, white fruits again, pineapple, white peach, lemon, lemon oil texture, orange, orange oak spice, medium plus finish. About an hour and a half later, this had become more steely, mineral and crisp citrus driven, more Chablis like. It was very good at both points. My #3 WOTN. 92+pts.

  • 2006 Beaux Frères Pinot Noir Beaux Frères Vineyard Flawed

USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Ribbon Ridge

Dark red color. Decanted for 1 hours, drank 1 glass over 2 hours. Sour cherry nose, sous bois, earthy. The palate is medium bodied, darker red fruits, cherry, tart cherry, red currant, tangy, dusty, spice, sous bois, briary, long. Still showing well, not sure that I hold long though, couple years. My and group #2 WOTN. 92+pts.

  • 2011 Antica Terra Pinot Noir Ceras 90 Points

    USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley

Dark red color. Decanted for 1 hours, drank 1 glass over 90 minutes. This was pretty fleshy and primary right now, there is an opulence to the ripe cherry fruit, vanilla bean, slightly firm tanns, but not a lot of nuance that I expect from the Antica Terra wines. Needs another year anyway. 90(+)pts.

  • 2009 Pahlmeyer Merlot

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Vert dark/purple red color. Decanted for 90 minutes. Followed one glass for 90 minutes. This had a wonderful nose, unfortunately the disjointed palate made this tough to handle. Best to smell the lovely mix of cassis, blackberry, boysenberry, and cherry vanilla aromas than to try to maneuver around the daunting piles of oak and alcohol strewn in the way. Also a bit herbal on the palate. I'm not sure how to access this one, faded fruit on top of big oak and high alcohol and now unbalanced, OR in need of time to settle down - if I had to bet, I go with the former based on all the ravishing notes. Disappointing for sure. Score withheld, impression 85-86 given the benefit of the nose.

  • 2000 Pavillon Rouge du Château Margaux 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

Very dark red color. Decanted for about 2.5hrs with a couple additional hours slow-O. This was wonderful, continuing to open on the glass, dusty, dry earth, funk, pencil lead, floral perfume, cassis. The palate is medium full bodied, cassis, pencil, a touch of funk and earth, black raspberry, mouth watering acidity, great tannins with some nice grip to them, long finish. Great stuff. Still youthful and clearly needs air, but really good now if decanted. My and group WOTN. 92+ to 93pts.

  • 2007 Rivers-Marie Cabernet Sauvignon 89 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Very dark/purple red color. Decanted for 3 hours. Drank 1 glass over an hour. I tend to agree with with galewskj. There's a lot to like here with a black fruit forward nose of cassis and blackberry, but the palate is fruit forward, extracted, sharp, dense and heavy, pedal to the metal hi octane Cali cab. Those that like that style are going to love this, but it is a bit much for my preference. I do like it more now than four years ago.

  • 2001 Château de Malle 88 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

Deep amber color. Drank 1 glass form 750ml. Lots of orange and apricot, medium body, not overly sweet, but it was angular and sharp, quite spicy on the palate detracting from the fruit. I've had a few bottles of various '01's that performed like this, so maybe not a pristine bottle. Previous bottles had been much better.
