The Boys of Bedrock without Bedrock. BBM and Dujac Clos St. Denis

It was a pleasure to welcome Chris Cottrell and Morgan Twain-Peterson to Minneapolis. They had a couple of events scheduled with the local Bedrock fans, but Steve Sigmond and I were able to coax them into arriving a day early for a great Monday night dinner at the newly opened St. Genevieve in south Minneapolis. A fun night.

  Terrific wine, that never fails to please. It is fully accessible now, and is a drinking wine, not necessarily a sipping wine. In the words of Morgan T-P, "this is VERY quaffable." I agree.

  This was an okay drink, but for me it really didn't live up to its potential (producer, vintage, vineyard). Nothing wrong with it, just not a standout, and a bit meh. Maybe the bottle?

  A repeat of my experience from two years ago. Silky, beautiful juice, that's really very open for business. Class, class, class. Fortunately, I'll drink it twice this week, as we're having a Dujac Clos St Denis vertical on Thursday.

Leaving Chris and Morgan to the frigid temperatures in Minneapolis, I moved on to NYC. This was theoretically a "low key" sushi night at Shuko, as a prelude to our Dujac Clos St Denis vertical the following night.

  The wine was in perfect shape, so very representative. Lovely old burg, drinking well. The burg equivalent of a "Sunday lunch claret".

  A 66 original, and this case of Peter's has general shown very well. This bottle was funny in that it was perfect across about 80% of the palate, but there was a hole in the mid-palate that was more intriguing than off-putting. A nice duo of 64 vs 66.

  An absolutely gorgeous and perfect 1980. I love this vintage, and tonight was no exception. One of the foursome though it "good to very good", but the rest of us rated it perfect for the vintage. Delicious.

The two themes for Thursday were BBM and Dujac Clos St Denis. Food and service at Marea were impeccable as always.

  Fantastic bottle. "Stunning" was said a couple of times. Very structured, and we were surprised this was one of the 05's. In the end, my wine of the flight. Not a hint of premox, and simply sublime juice.

  As always, this wine was a treat, and had a subtlety that's initially easy to overlook. Classic Carillon. Drunk leisurely over four hours, this blossomed from good to great during that period.

  For my palate, this was a rock star, and easily my BBM of the night. Ray called it a "liquefied ball of cotton candy". Not sure I agreed with that, but whatever it was, I'm in. Sublime.

  I found this bottle subdued, and four hours of air didn't change my initial impression. Carl loved it, and truly believes its just a matter of development time. Most of us weren't with him on that. Bottle or wine; not sure.

The Dujac Clos St. Denis did not disappoint. I really love their CSD, and would happily repeat these flights anytime.

  We started out our CSD vertical with a bang. The 85 started with a bit of funk, but that blew off. Leather and cherry on top, with a mushroom and forest backdrop. Fantastic!

  Beautiful, youthful, and great from the first sip. Classy and elegant, a perfect Dujac wine. As usual, much more accessible than most 93's.
