Coravin fun - Burgundys to drink in 2016

Introduction

A new year means this years bottles have come out of storage and into the home fridges. As a special treat I decided to run through the crop of Red Burgundys that are up for consumption with a quick warm up white to kick things off.

Flight 1 (7 Notes)

  • 2008 Domaine Leflaive Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Clavoillon

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru

    From Coravin. The bouquet is initially green apple and lemon but this subsumes to honey, butter, cream and almost coconut with plentiful spice. Quite rich. On the palate it's again rich with buttered almond, honey and spiced citric notes. Crikey. Rather pleasant.

  • 2011 Nicolas Rossignol Bourgogne

    France, Burgundy, Bourgogne

    From Coravin. Red currant, strawberries & slight cherry, smoky ash. Fresh, juicy slightly unripe strawberry underpinned by smoky notes. Quite pleasant.

  • 2011 Nicolas Rossignol Pommard Les Vignots

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pommard

    From Coravin. On the nose slightly sweet red cherry and plum backed by very slight stalkiness. A bit of cream and cedar and spice. It smells really lovely. In the mouth the wine is juicy, with initial sweet cherry that slightly sours and is joined by some very subtle herbaceous notes. Some silky tannins and gentle spice. This wine really is wonderfully balanced and refreshing.

  • 2011 Domaine Michel & Joanna Ecard Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru Les Serpentières Vieilles Vignes

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru

    From Coravin. On the nose, quite stalky over red fruit and biscuit. Almost aniseed and spice. It's quite juicy as well with slightly sour fruit. Better than I remember it being...Hmm. Actually, with more time in the glass this rounds out and improves. Settles down and the jagged edges disappear. Still stalky but nicer. More time I think.

  • 2006 Domaine Michel Lafarge Volnay Vendanges Sélectionnées

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay

    From Coravin. Another year, another bottle. Leather, earthy, faded red currant fruit, slight cream and muted spice on the nose. also a slight metallic note. In the mouth the wine is slightly tart and has talc textured tannins, finishes with spice. okay.

  • 2006 Lucien Le Moine Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Vaucrains

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru

    From Coravin. On the nose aromas of ripe cherry, cream, vanilla, spice, cedar, rich and dense. Also a tiny bit of stalkiness. In the mouth more of the same, quite tannic as well...drying tannins in fact. It lacks a bit of freshness compared to other Burgundies this evening.

  • 2000 Frederic Esmonin Clos Vougeot

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

    From Coravin. On the nose it's dense and brooding, a contained beast with dark berry fruit, especially cherry, spice, cream, vanilla...quite youthful still. More of the same on the palate with quite thick, savoury, tannins. With time it opens with black cherry notes on the nose and becomes more juicy and spicy on the palate. Very long. Hmm

Closing

The old rule is vintage for Bordeaux, producer for Burgundy...well, if that's the case then I'll be adding Nicolas Rossignol to my list of producers. Very pleasant, especially as 2011 wasn't a particularly flash vintage (not that any of these vintages are that good).
