Introduction

Just a nice little Friday afternoon with some pizza. Not a bad day.

Flight 1 - Friday Afternoon (6 Notes)

  • 2007 Hubert Lamy Saint-Aubin 1er Cru En Remilly Blanc 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Saint-Aubin 1er Cru

    (1/22/2016)

Light gold color. PNP, drank 2 glasses over an hour. This was very good, showing lemon, citrus zest, ocean air and hints of vanilla and light toasted oak. The palate is medium bodied, good salinity, lemon, lovely, lightly toasted oak, very well balanced, medium finish.

  • 2006 Fongoli Montefalco Sagrantino 88 Points

    Italy, Umbria, Montefalco, Montefalco Sagrantino

    (1/22/2016)

Dark red color. Decanted for 30 minutes plus, drank 1 glass over 2 hours. The nose is a bit volatile, anise, red fruit, woodsy, spiced. The palate is mineral dense, started more metallic, but toned down, a bit rustic, brooding dark fruits, firm tannins, anise finish with wood spice. Interesting.

  • 2009 Ridge Lytton Springs 92 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Dry Creek Valley

    (1/22/2016)

Very dark red color. Decanted for roughly 20 minutes initially, then drank 2 glasses over 3 hours. se, showing a mix of fruits, starting off with blackcherry and plum, with hints of blackberry, gradually unfolding and becoming more red berry based with a light damp earthiness that really charms you. Subtle hints of mint late. Just a little green edge on the nose and palate which lends more character than distraction. The palate is tangy, medium bodied, at times the fruit impresses as plum and juicy, yet restrained enough, medium bodied, dark cherry, red berries, plum, pepper, long finish. Very nice and showing well as is.

  • 2012 Carlisle Zinfandel Dry Creek Valley 91 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Dry Creek Valley

    (1/22/2016)

Very dark red with a purple hue. Decanted for about an hour, drank 2 glasses over 3 hours. More youthful next to the '09 Ridge Lytton as expected, but really holds its own well. I love the dusty, cedarbox nose upfront, very beguiling, with less overt fruit, dark red overtone, soft spices and dried flowers, a touch of vanilla. The palate is medium full bodied, dark red fruits that seem to become darker still over time, spice, tangy, cedar. 91+pts.

  • 2003 Rubicon Estate Cabernet Sauvignon Cask 94 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley, Rutherford

    (1/22/2016)

Very dark red/purple color. Decanted for 2 hours; drank 2 glasses over 3 hours. Its been almost 3 years since I had this last. This bottle was back to where the others had been and probably near peak now, but showing no signs of slippage. Really well integrated, this has probably been my favorite vintage of Cask over the last 10 years, though I have not tried the most recent ones. The nose is effusive with a perfume of cassis and raspberry, floral. The palate is supple and velvety, medium full bodied, elegant, pretty cassis and red berry fruit, integrated tannins and oak, with a long finish. This was so easy and pleasing. Unanimous WOTN. 93+ to 94pts.

  • 2005 Château Climens 94 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Barsac

    (1/22/2016)

Deep gold color. Drank 1 glass from 375ml. Good thing this wasn't included in WOTN voting or it might have been a different outcome. Just plain lovely, with several d'Yquem comparisons made. Apricot, honey, pear, orange, spice, white flowers. The palate has great tension, very good balance of sweet, fruit, and spice, orange, sleek, honey, orange, pear, nectarine, beautiful texture and a very sophisticated and complex character, very long tingling finish. 94+ to 95pts.

Medium dark gold color. PNP, drank 2 glasses over an hour. The nose shows bright orange blossom, tangerine, lemon and subtle mineral notes. The palate is medium bodied and on the lean side; light- medium acid, lemon, tangerine, hints of saline and mineral. Medium finish. Very restrained, no sign of oak and no malo here.
