In 07/04/00/99/95 vertical, that I generally didn't enjoy. This was at the better end of the vertical, but still I found it too extreme and concentrated in an oily, heavy manner. Good fruit concentration and persistence, but this isn't my style of wine, and that was group consensus as well.

In 07/04/00/99/95 vertical, this was a personal least favorite given I found it almost sweet and mostly food unfriendly. This had the same heaviness as the entire flight, so that didn't help either. Others liked this slightly more, but the flight generally disappointed the entire group tonight.

My favorite of the 95/99/00/04/07 vertical, and that was a shockingly disappointing flight. This was heavy and unctuous. While I liked the fruit quality and concentration, I didn't really enjoy the heaviness and textural dullness. And again, that's the best of the lot tonight. General group disappointment with the flight, so it wasn't just me being a Burg snob.

While I'd consider this oxidative under normal circumstances, I'd almost consider this spring fresh in context of the Beaucastel Blanc VV flight. Pleasant and well balanced with a nice sense of energy on finish.

Served in 07/04/00/99/95 vertical. This was served slightly on the warm side, which didn't help given the seemingly high alcohol level and overall fatness that bordered on sloppiness (to me). But this quickly deteriorated in glass and had lost almost anything interesting within 20+ minutes.

Floral with lots of spice aromas with mature black berry, liqueur hints and earth hints. Softened and elegant structure is evident, providing great textures in this stage of its evolution. My WOTN, and I think in most others' top 2 or 3. I think Jim has owned this bottle since release, which I'm sure helped.

While I liked this wine tonight, I think the others enjoyed it more. Ripe black fruit throughout with some kirsch notes and borderline jammy. Good spice and concentration, but the ripe fruit really just dominates every other element here.

Ripe black berries and jam, dark chocolate, liqueur and leather. Rich, ripe and concentrated black fruit flavors that are mature, but still well balanced. Just slightly one-note for me.

Dense black berries with roasted meat, licorice and pepper. At first I preferred this over the 1999 in the next glass, but that wine filled out more completely, and the 1995 is still firm. Good and tasty now, but upside from here.

Open and decanted almost 2 hours before serving. I thought it slightly hollow to start, but this filled out quickly in glass. Powerful black berries with game and leather. Very long, complex and harmonious.

Earthy with lots of mature black fruit and cooked mushroom. If served blind, I'd have thought the oldest in the flight, but this is still powerful and dense with Old School rustic elegance. I like this a lot now, but think it might even be better in another decade.

An extreme style of wine that isn't exactly what I enjoy. Or that i could identify as Chateauneuf. Best for people who prefer no/little sense of "place" in their wine. But very tasty for near-term pleasure, even if too jammy.

Tired and showing almost nothing to me. Bleh.
Ken: "It's in a strange place."
Me: "Yes...it's strange that this is in my glass."

NV Krug Champagne Brut Grande Cuvée 92 Points
France, Champagne
Again the most recent release, this was both ripe and powerful, yet balanced and elegant. Krug in a nutshell.
