Introduction

Meet the maker with Vinteloper - David Bowley took us through 8 of his wines.

Flight 1 (8 Notes)

  • 2015 Vinteloper Wines Riesling Watervale

Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Watervale

aromas of wet stone, passion fruit, lime, very slight sulphur and an almost lychee note. In the mouth the wine is juicy, tangy, slight spice, lime is the dominant citrus. Quite warm on the finish. Meh

  • 2013 Vinteloper Wines Riesling Odeon Watervale

Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Watervale

lime, slight kerosene, struck match, slight cheese and yoghurt over passion fruit and orange blossom on the nose. In the mouth the wine is juicy, tangy but sapid and broad with a leesy depth. Again a touch warm but also a savoury note on the palate. Rather nice.

  • 2013 Vinteloper Wines Pinot Noir

Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Adelaide Hills

Muted black fruits, biscuit, slight leather, slight metallic note, slight cream and coffee note. On the palate there is slight burnt fruit, quite chewy. Not very pleasant with alcohol heat intruding on the finish.

  • 2014 Vinteloper Wines Pinot Noir

Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Adelaide Hills

I approached this with a certain amount of trepidation after it's appalling showing at Pinot Palooza on Monday. Aromas of sweet cherry, rhubarb and almost baked sweet beetroot note, cream. Exceedingly perfumed but also a slight stalk note but very well integrated. the wine is has flavours of juicy, cherry, fine talc textured tannin, again there is a slight stalkiness here as well. Long, very pleasant, slight alcohol heat and very good compared to Monday - I would not have thought it was the same wine based on my recollections.

  • 2013 Vinteloper Wines Adelaide Adelo

Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Adelaide Plains

Pretty perfumed initially with red and black cherry and black berry with black pepper spice, slight citrus notes and then a rather unpleasant rubber note - like Pinotage. In the mouth the wine is thick, dense with spice and talk textured tannin, slight green bitterness on the back of the palate. Meh

  • 2013 Vinteloper Wines Touriga Nacional

Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, Langhorne Creek

Medium plus intensity aromas of black cherry, berry and plum - quite compote - cream, vanilla, slightly herbaceous, rich and worked but quite perfumed as well. More of the same on the palate, dense and sweet spiced tannins, vanilla, cream, touch of salinity, a bit warm, pleasant. Plentiful American oak here which is not an issue for me.

  • 2013 Vinteloper Wines McLaren Vale Shiraz

    Australia, South Australia

Medium minus intensity aromas of liquorice, black berry over cherry, also some red fruit notes and peppery spice, some briny salinity, slightly funky notes and quite perfumed. Lots going on. In the mouth the wine is juicy, spicy, with flavours of black berry , broad on the palate with chalky tannins and a touch bitter on the finish. Hmm.

  • 2012 Vinteloper Wines McLaren Vale Shiraz

    Australia, South Australia

Initial scent of wild ferment, cream, ripe and almost jammy - compote if you will, black berry over cherry, spice almost petrol notes, vanilla and, with time, peppery spice. On the palate the wine is thick and dense, ripe with compote fruit, rich, almost porty, chewy tannins finishes, bitter and savoury. Full on. Quite old school but constrained. Nice.

Closing

the Odeon Riesling was good and interesting, a wine for the intellect if you will. Put me in mind of the Heymann Lowenstein I tried back at Prince in February but without so much fruit. The 2014 Pinot Noir was pretty special as well - and a complete contrast from the appalling experience I had with the same wine on Monday at Pinot Palooza. Touriga was dominated by Yankee Oak but I don't have a problem with that. 2012 Shiraz was okay.
