Triangle Wine Experience 2016 Dinner - Poole's Diner

Domaine de la Cote, Sandhi & Failla wineries with Rajat Parr

Flight 1 (1 Note)

Flight 2 (2 Notes)

Dish: Shrimp, clam, crab dish w/spaghetti squash

  • 2013 Sandhi Wines Chardonnay Sanford & Benedict Vineyard 95 Points

USA, California, Central Coast, Sta. Rita Hills

(from magnum) lemon, orange zest, mineral, stone. Amazing with food. High acid. Light and elegant mouth-feel. Was floored.

Liked the Sandhi better than the 2013 Failla Haynes Chard

  • 2013 Failla Chardonnay Haynes Vineyard 93 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley, Coombsville

Totally different mouth feel and viscosity than the Sandhi Chard. More fruit. Less acid. Melon, pear, Apple, mango. More viscous. Still liked it, but clearly from relatively warmer climate fruit (Coombsville).

This round I preferred the 2013 Sandhi Sanford & Benedict Chard from magnum

Flight 3 (2 Notes)

Dish: Guinea Hen confit w/cornbread and huckleberry jam

  • 2013 Domaine de la Côte Pinot Noir Memorious 92 Points

USA, California, Central Coast, Sta. Rita Hills

Light, too green, cherries, peppers, short. Earth. Nose is killer, but on the palate a relative miss in the tasting, less complex. Did get a little better with air. Pepper. Needs time? Less my style, like the Sandhi Pinots better.

Thought the 2013 Failla Occidental Ridge Pinot was the clear winner here

  • 2013 Failla Pinot Noir Occidental Ridge Sonoma Coast 94 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast

Lush red fruit, raspberries, palate coating, love it. Well rounded. Cooler climate fruit. Very elegant. Kept coming back for more. Loved it.

This was better than the 2013 Domaine d la Côte Memorias Pinot

Dish: Braised lambs neck Shepard’s pie w/shaved perform truffle. Rutabaga (w/consistency of mashed potatoes).

  • 2012 Failla Syrah Hudson Vineyard 94 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Blacker than a black hole. Purple. Bramble. Blackberry. Licorice. Spice. Tannic. Decently high acid. Palate coating. Enjoyed it, better than expected.
