Introduction

We knew the theme, but all wines were tasted blind.

Flight 1 (3 Notes)

  • 2006 Vincent Dauvissat (René & Vincent) Chablis 1er Cru Vaillons 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru

Beautiful bouquet with ripe fruits and minerals. On the palate ripe yellow and white fruits and minerals as well. Good acidity and bitterness. And even though (or because of?) the wine was open a day already, it was a lovely wine with luxury and good complexity. Not a bit too old yet. Can be cellared for some more years.

  • 1988 Louis Carillon Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Champs Canet

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru

Reading the positive notes here, we must have had a seriously mistreated bottle. Dark yellow color. In the bouquet dry honey, nuts and oxidized flavors. On the palate orange, a lot of minerals, but very mature and oxidized. There was also oak and grapefruit. A concentrated wine, but over the hill. I will not score this bottle. I think you could taste it must have been great years ago.

  • 2002 Mas de Daumas Gassac Blanc 88 Points

France, Languedoc Roussillon, Languedoc, Vin de Pays de l'Hérault

In the bouquet minerals, nuts and slightly oxidized flavors. On the palate still some very ripe yellow fruits, apricots, tangerine, honey and polishing wax. Very tasty, but also very mature. Full bodied and even a bit fat. Low acidity. Overall an interesting wine and still pleasurable, but a few years ago with most likely more freshness it was probably better. I nevertheless score the wine for tonight: 88

Flight 2 (3 Notes)

  • 1980 Mas de Daumas Gassac 88 Points

France, Languedoc Roussillon, Languedoc, Vin de Pays de l'Hérault

The bouquet is not really expressive, but there are some red and dark berry fruit impressions as well as some vegetal notes. On the palate red and dark berry fruits as well, spiciness, clove, licorice, some chocolate a lot of acidity and drying tannin with still a firm bite. Some tasters thought this was an early 2000 wine. Amazing that a wine of this age can still have so much fresh acidity and tannin. At this moment I don’t think the wine will improve anymore, but the acidity and tannin structure are special and it wouldn’t surprise me this bottle is still drinkable in 2020 and maybe even a bit better than today. Today’s score was 88.

  • 1989 Mas de Daumas Gassac 91 Points

France, Languedoc Roussillon, Languedoc, Vin de Pays de l'Hérault

In the bouquet dark forest fruits, leather, sweet spices and some dusty impressions. On the palate dark and red berry fruits, herbs and spices, licorice root, firm acidity and slightly drying tannin. Also a touch of sweetness. The tannin is also soft and round. Overall a beautiful wine with still a few years of future. 91 for tonight.

  • 1992 Mas de Daumas Gassac 90 Points

France, Languedoc Roussillon, Languedoc, Vin de Pays de l'Hérault

The bouquet is not really expressive, but there is some mint and eucalyptus. On the palate a bit dusty, sweet spices and dark fruits like plums. Because of the fresh acidity some red fruits as well. Good acidity and tannin with a good bite. Harmonious, full bodied and round wine. Ready now, but can last until 2017+ as well.

  • 1995 Mas de Daumas Gassac 90 Points

France, Languedoc Roussillon, Languedoc, Vin de Pays de l'Hérault

At first barnyard which blows off quite quickly. Black and red fruits as well as sweet spices in the bouquet. On the palate mouth filling with sweet spices, red and dark berry fruits, cinnamon, some sweetness well balanced by good acidity. Mild acidity and soft tannin which is a bit drying. In a perfect drinking stage now, but no hurry.

In the bouquet some barnyard, animals, leather, bacon and salty licorice. On the palate mainly red forest fruits, a lot of (sweet) spices and sweet and salty licorice. • 2007 Mas de Daumas Gassac 87 Points

France, Languedoc Roussillon, Languedoc, Vin de Pays de l'Hérault

In the bouquet mainly dark, but also some red forest fruits and sweet spices. On the palate the wine is still a bit locked. Mainly red fruits and fresh acidity. Rustic. The wine is much more simple than the older vintages we tasted tonight. But it is still very youthful. Probably with more age on it, it will show better what it has in store. Try around 2020. Just 87+ for tonight.

  • 2009 Mas de Daumas Gassac 89 Points

France, Languedoc Roussillon, Languedoc, Vin de Pays de l'Hérault

The bouquet is completely locked and only shows some garrigue. On the palate there are a lot of dark forest fruits, dark plums, leather, licorice, earth and herbs and spices. Rustic. Good acidity and firm tannin, Still much too young. Wait until at least 2020 and it will stay nice for at least a decade after that. 89++ for tonight.
