Introduction

Every participant had to bring a wine of the theme. We did not know which wines were brought by the others. All wines were tasted blind, also without knowing when the wine you brought was poured.

Flight 1 (2 Notes)

  • 2011 Massaya Blanc 84 Points

    Lebanon, Bekaa Valley

Apples and some yellow fruits in the bouquet. On the palate also apples, some melon, ok acidity and pleasant bitterness and a short finish. Nothing really complex or interesting, but certainly a very enjoyable wine which will be nice with all sorts of food.

  • 2011 Massaya Classic Rosé 84 Points

    Lebanon, Bekaa Valley

Fresh bouquet with rose buds and hints of strawberries. On the palate some strawberries as well, juicy acidity, nicely dry and some length. Not really complex, but certainly very ok and pleasant.

Flight 2 (3 Notes)

  • 2005 Nabise Blanc de Blancs 86 Points

    Lebanon, Bekaa Valley, Mount Lebanon

Smoke, toasted oak and limestone minerals in the bouquet. Same on the palate. A bit volcanic. Reductive. Ok acidity, a slight touch of sweetness and oak bitterness in the finish. Interesting wine.

  • 2004 Chateau Musar Blanc 87 Points

    Lebanon, Bekaa Valley

Pale yellow. A lot of oaky flavors, apples, minerals, a bit reductive, mild acidity and some bitterness. Good length. Different and not extremely special, but the wine still seems to be very youthful and even a bit reticent. 87+ for today.

  • 1999 Chateau Musar Blanc 89 Points

    Lebanon, Bekaa Valley

Deep yellow, almost amber color. In the bouquet minerals, some apple, caramel, butterscotch, almonds and pleasant oxidized impressions. Same on the palate. Rasped apples, raisins and marzipan and also a touch of sweetness. Polishing wax. Reductive. Ok acidity and bitterness. A complex and special wine. Some might think this is too old, but I think there still is some future in this wine.

Flight 3 (2 Notes)

  • 2008 Château St. Thomas Les Emirs 86 Points

    Lebanon, Bekaa Valley

The bouquet shows cherries and some dust. On the palate at first a bit reticent, but the wine opens up quickly. Dark cherries and blackberries. Concentrated cassis and some red fruits as well. Some autumn impressions. Ok acidity and bitterness. Slightly sticky tannin. A lush and a bit sweet wine. Ok easy going wine, but lacking some finesse to give a higher score.

  • 2007 Clos St. Thomas Chateau St-Thomas 87 Points

    Lebanon, Bekaa Valley

Dusty cherries in the bouquet. Juicy cherries on the palate. A bit lactic. Meaty as well. Vanilla from the oak. Ok acidity and round, a bit sticky tannin. No extreme complexity or finesse, but certainly a very ok wine with a future of several years. Will probably show more complexity when the oak is more integrated and the primary cherry fruits have faded a bit.

Flight 4 (3 Notes)

  • 2007 Massaya Gold Reserve

    Lebanon, Bekaa Valley

In the bouquet some pleasant barnyard, licorice, laurel, smoky oak. Overall a fairly complex bouquet. On the palate special. Something which reminds of a slightly corked wine. But the wine was still good enough to taste. It had concentrated dark fruits, minerals, smoke, licorice and laurel, good acidity and juicy tannin with a good bite, a touch of sweetness and some heat in the finish. No score.

  • 2009 Château Ksara Cuvée 3eme Millenaire 88 Points

    Lebanon, Bekaa Valley

Dark cherries and a bit dust in the bouquet. On the palate a juicy start with very ripe dark berry fruits and cherries. A lot of vanilla, some spiciness as well as a touch of bell pepper. Soft and round tannin. Some heat in the finish.

  • 2005 Domaine du Castel Grand Vin Judean Hills 89 Points

    Israel, Judean Hills

Beautiful bouquet with animals, barnyard, licorice, laurel and open fire place and vanilla. On the palate a luxurious start with beautiful oak, ripe red and dark fruits, soft acidity and tannin and also a slight touch of sweetness. Although not really corked there was also something not really fresh in this bottle. I nevertheless scored the wine, because overall it was still a pleasure. A perfect bottle could score a few points higher.

Flight 5 (2 Notes)

  • 2004 Chateau Musar 88 Points

    Lebanon, Bekaa Valley

If this bottle is exemplary for the vintage, 2004 is not one of the greatest vintages for Musar. The bouquet is beautiful with pleasant barnyard, smoky oak and salty licorice, but on the palate there are some glue and oxidized impressions. Dark fruits, chocolate and mild tannin. Good concentration, but overall a bit disappointing.

  • 1991 Chateau Musar 92 Points

    Lebanon, Bekaa Valley

This is a great Musar with a very pleasantly stinky and complex bouquet. On the palate barnyard, juicy fruits, good acidity, a touch of sweetness as well, silky soft tannin and a great length. Mouth filling and complex wine at its peak now.
