Introduction

We had to bring a Talbot or contibute an amount, because the host had several vintages.

Flight 1 (1 Note)

Flight 2 (3 Notes)

  • 1958 Château Talbot

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Cola brown color. In the bouquet, tea, rust, celery, nuts and chocolate. On the palate chocolate, celery and coffee. Completely dissolved tannin. Some acidity, but the wine is much too old. No score.

  • 1967 Château Talbot

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Chocolate brown color. Rustic bouquet with a lot of tertiary flavors. Organic, celery, tea, coffee, tobacco and also some leather. On the palate chocolate and rust. Completely dissolved tannin, firm acidity and a touch of sweetness. The wine still has some body, but is well over the hill. No score.

  • 1970 Château Talbot

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Dusty bouquet, chocolate and in the distance some leftovers of red fruits. On the palate a lot of acidity which is still juicy and silky soft tannin. Medium bodied at best. This bottle showed better than the one I tasted 2 years ago and was still drinkable. But the wine is over the hill. No score.

Flight 3 (4 Notes)

  • 1984 Château Talbot 86 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Rustic bouquet with earth, smoke, tea, tobacco, sweet spices, leather, bell pepper and still some red fruits. On the palate the same flavors plus caramel, graphite and mushrooms, high acidity and soft tannin. Although the wine is too old, it is still pleasurable to drink, so I’ll score it: 86

  • 1992 Château Talbot 84 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Light bouquet with bell pepper, red berry fruits and some menthol. On the palate rustic, earth, chocolate, red fruits, a lot of acidity and soft tannin. Very mature, but still alive. Overall a meager wine.

  • 1994 Château Talbot 89 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Beautiful bouquet, rustic, some pleasant barnyard, smoke and cassis. On the palate cassis, some red fruits as well, some caramel, fresh acidity and slightly drying tannin. Medium plus body. A pleasant surprise. The wine is at the end of its maturity and drinks lovely now. Drink soon or within the next two years is probably the wisest thing to do.

Flight 4 (3 Notes)

  • 1997 Château Talbot 89 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Beautiful and complex bouquet. Rustic, earthy, pleasant barnyard and ripe forest fruits. Same on the palate. Some chocolate as well, good acidity and soft tannin. A beautiful and harmonious wine. Now at its peak. Probably wise to drink between now and 2 years.

  • 1998 Château Talbot 87 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Red fruits and some impressions of metal in the bouquet. On the palate some chocolate, dark and red forest fruits, bell pepper, good acidity and a bit unripe/green tannin. Medium bodied at best. Drank beside the 1997 and 1999, this 1998 was the least impressive. Definitely ready now, but considering the vintage this should be the best wine of the three. Not sure, but maybe wait 2 more years?

  • 1999 Château Talbot 90 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Beautiful bouquet with cassis, some pleasant barnyard, earth, smoke and beautiful oak. In the mouth a slightly sweet start with ripe dark fruits, some tobacco and coffee, still a little bell pepper, a beautiful balance between acidity and sweetness and soft tannin with a pleasant bite. Good length. Beautiful wine. Ready now and the next few years.

Flight 5 (3 Notes)

  • 2004 Château Talbot 91 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

The bouquet is a bit locked, but there is good cassis, beautiful oak and some pleasant farmyard flavors. On the palate quite concentrated with cassis, leather, good chocolate, beautiful acidity and tannin with a good bite. Give this wine 2 – 4+ years of additional cellaring and it will be great. 91+ for today.

  • 2005 Château Talbot 91 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Ripe dark forest fruits like cassis in the bouquet. Beautiful oak as well. On the palate juicy dark and red forest fruits as well. Some bell pepper and smoke. Good acidity and round tannin. A harmonious wine that will probably show a bit more of its complexity around 2018 – 2020+. But already really offers nice drinking at this moment as well. 91+

  • 2006 Château Talbot 90 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Intense bouquet with ripe dark forest fruits, a touch of pleasant barnyard, smoke and vanilla. Same on the palate, some chocolate, a beautiful balance between acidity and sweetness, round tannin with a good bite and some bitterness. Early maturity now and around 2020 probably more complex and refined. 90+ for today.
