Introduction

6 of us got together, with the theme being 94+ points from WS, WA or Vinous. Some stellar bottles and some duds.

Flight 1 (9 Notes)

  • 2013 Failla Chardonnay Haynes Vineyard 89 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley, Coombsville

Pop and pour. The nose is nice and classic California chardonnay - lemon, butter, oak, toffee. The palate is quite acidic. Tart. The finish is incredibly acidic. It makes me think this producer wanted to dial back the oak/richenss, and they dialed it back too far.

  • 1984 Dominus Estate 90 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Pop and pour. The nose on this is killer, aged Bordeaux. A bit of funk, earth, savory, tar. A lovely nose. There is earth and sweet savory bell pepper. The mid-palate is ok but the finish is alcoholic and short. I'm guessing this was drinking better a few years ago. Still, it has so much complexity that it is a treat. The nose is maybe 96, but the palate pulls down my score of this wine.

  • 1990 Silverado Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Limited Reserve 93 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Pop and pour, the cork was crumbling and fell into the bottle, had to be decanted. Fantastic aged cabernet. Lots of leather and red fruit on the nose. The palate is cherry and red fruit. There is a sweet earthy richness to it, imagine stamping some black cherries into loamy earth. This wine was still quite alive despite its age. I don't know if it was better a few years ago, but this bottle was drinking very well.

  • 1995 Château Ducru-Beaucaillou 95 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

3 hour decant and 3 hour slow o. This wine had everything you want in an aged Bordeaux. Easy to drink, wonderful nose and palate, silky, elegant, rich. Unanimous wine of the night.

  • 2004 Podere La Vigna Brunello di Montalcino 88 Points

Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

Slow o'd a couple hours. I did not think much of this. It still drank young/primary, lots of bright cherry. A bit of alcohol on the finish.

  • 2006 Martoccia di Brunelli Luca Brunello di Montalcino 90 Points

Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

Exactly the same experience as my note 1.5 years ago : Fairly straightforward and tasty, with cherry, minerals and somewhat-firm tannins. This went well with pasta (shocking, I know).

  • 2008 Outpost Cabernet Sauvignon 89 Points

USA, California, Napa Valley, Howell Mountain

Decanted 4 hours. Drank a good-sized glass over an hour. This cab is even bigger than I remember it. Amped up, tons of fruit, lots of alcohol and wood. A bruiser.

  • 2004 Domaine Pierre Usseglio & Fils Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée de mon Aïeul 89 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

SLow o'd for 4 hours. Drank a glass over an hour. The wine seems quite dark, with licorice root and plummy fruit. It is relatively enjoyable, but seems to lack balance. The finish is a bit hot, even though I chilled it down a bit. I'm staring to lose interest with this producer - flashy modern wines that are monsters in their youth and don't age that well.

  • 2001 Château Doisy-Daëne 86 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Barsac

From 1/2 bottle, this wine lacked sweetness and was quite crisp. I'd imagine this would go better with chinese food than trying to serve it for dessert. Slightly medicinal. One taster suspected it's in a shut-down phase right now. I hope so. I've not had good luck with this producer, and this is one of the worst 2001 Sauternes I've had.
