Flight 1 (13 Notes)

  • 1995 Salon Champagne Blanc de Blancs Brut 93 Points

    France, Champagne

Good bready nose, citrus, some cream but mostly white and yellow fruit. Developed but still has good energy and vibrancy. Fresh minerality. Really great all around and in a good place to enjoy right now. Out of a flute so not as expressive as it perhaps could have been.

  • 1979 Coche-Dury Meursault 1er Cru Les Perrières 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru

incredible nose, extremely fresh, only somewhat reductive, soldering smoke, white rubber, sulphur, creamy honeysuckle, beeswax, some buttermilk, fair bit of smoke, amazingly expressive and complex. Age shows on the palate though depth and density, great development but with acid to support it. Cool stoney salty notes. Hallmark Coche signature here. Really special drinking.

  • 1995 Coche-Dury Meursault 1er Cru Les Perrières 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru

Still has the Coche hallmarks but initially quite metallic and steely on the nose. Nice minerals throughout. Touch thinner on the palate. Came back to this glass after an hour or so and it had opened up entirely, big florals and super rich.

  • 1992 Coche-Dury Meursault 1er Cru Les Perrières 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru

Saline and brine nose, oysters and shellfish, still has Coche signature but is nearly Chablis-like. Quite young, some grape seed oils. Can't really get past the oysters, haven't encountered a Coche like this one. Everyone really seemed to love it though. Still wonderful on the palate, dense, rich, and delicious.

  • 1993 Etienne Sauzet Montrachet 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Montrachet Grand Cru

Supremely fresh, green almond, cut grass, damp hay. Fair bit of dry sulphur here too. Very dense and rich on palate. Cinnamon and ginger. Much better after an hour or so in the glass, deeper and richer than earlier, but still not on the level of any of the Coche-Durys before. The sulphur is a bit dominating and isn't as well integrated as Coche or even Leflaive. Not as reductive though.

  • 1966 Château Haut-Brion 94 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

Red cedar, currant fruit, plenty of Haut-Brion spice, tertiary. Some scorched earth, ashy. Palate has fully ripe fruit still, slow burning finish. Still plenty of energy and grip here. Smoked red and black fruit, charcoal. An ominous and impressive Haut-Brion, really intriguing, advanced and tertiary.

  • 1966 Château Lafite Rothschild 91 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Good nose but surprisingly soft fruit, more ripe strawberry and raspberry than darker fruits. Beautiful damp soily notes, damp leathers. Still made for good drinking tonight but perhaps a touch milky / cloudy. Sort of surprised to see a Lafite somewhat defeated and this tired. Soft roses. Actually a bit better after two+ hours, quite rustic.

  • 1986 Château Cheval Blanc 93 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Lush, rich, vibrant red berry fruit. Major red and black liquorice. Some mint and menthol developing. Showing beautifully but definitely has a lot of juice remaining. Made for pleasurable drinking but should be left alone for another long while. A striking comparison to the '66 left banks enjoyed beforehand, have never encountered an '86 so juicy. Opulent.

  • 1976 Ruinart Champagne Dom Ruinart Blanc de Blancs 93 Points

    France, Champagne

Terrific nose and palate, warm, bready, very peachy, very fresh, everyone was super impressed with this. Still has energy, really a great place for drinking now, fully developed but alive. Peachy, roses, some woody tones. Palate cleanser between reds but will definitely seek out more of this. Awesome.

  • 1985 Paul Jaboulet Aîné Hermitage La Chapelle 92 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage

Intense and focused nose of new leather, black currant and black cherry. Smoked meats, barbecue pit, scorched earth, coffee grinds and mocha. Smoky and meaty. Somewhat tough to get a read on tonight, perhaps not as expressive as expected. Would really like to come back to this with some barbecue...

  • 2002 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Echezeaux 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru

Enticing nose, somewhat green, leafy, and stemmy, all in a great way. Reads very young, but very fresh and elegant. Explosive on palate, tremendous fruit power up front, but also very nuanced and expressive through the end. Woody notes too. Finish goes and goes. A real pleasure.

  • 1985 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Richebourg 97 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Richebourg Grand Cru

Intriguing and heavily nuanced nose, spiced teas, roses, dried rose petals, drying berry fruit, rustic dry underbrush. Damp soil. Slightly smoky, a little meaty too. Mocha and iced coffee notes. Cool black cherry and menthol-laden fruit still hanging around, but very soft. Wow this is something special, requires attention to detail and isn't flirtatious. Cerebral and pensive. Beautiful.

  • 1989 Château Mouton Rothschild 93 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Similar notes to last time, the lead pencil and damp earth is just awesome. Another really strong showing here, too young if one complaint but just so hedonistic right now. Juicy red cedar-laden fruit. Served this blind to a room of fairly impressive tasters, appellation and vintage were called and one real pro nailed it. Love this every time.
