@ SS Bordeaux: Left or Right bank?
Tasted Friday, December 19, 2014 by Zweder with 376 views

Introduction

We all had to bring a left- and right bank wine. There were no flights. Everyone decided when it was a good moment for the bottle he brought. So except for the wines we brought ourselves all wines were tasted fully blind. Our host SS threw in a few extra.

Flight 1 (19 Notes)

  • 2002 Champagne Boulachin Chaput Champagne Brut Millésimé 90 Points

    France, Champagne

Sorry, not many specific notes. Nice fresh citrus and some minerals. Pleasant bubble.

  • 1971 Château Latour Grand Vin

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

If I am not mistaken this wine was decanted several hours before tasting and in this case that was not the wisest decision. When we had it in our glass the wine had lost most of its liveliness. I will not score the wine, but the (completely blind) impressions I made: Bouquet with earth and some barnyard. Same on the palate, some bell pepper, spiciness, medium acidity and soft, still somewhat green tannin which is still a bit sticky. Quite mature.

  • 2009 Château Poujeaux 90 Points

France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Moulis en Médoc

Creamy bouquet with red and dark berry fruits and good vanilla from the oak. On the palate juicy fruits, at first mostly red berries, but with some more airtime the dark forest fruits showed more prominent. A touch of sweetness balanced by good acidity and round and ripe tannin. A touch of pleasant bitterness in the finish. Very early maturity now, probably better around 2017 and I have a few, so there will probably a new TN around 2017 or 2018. For the moment I think the wine will be at its peak between 2018 and 2022+? 90+

  • 2008 Château Joanin Bécot 90 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux

Smoky and rustic bouquet with black forest fruits and sweet spices. Same on the palate; cassis, cedar, beautiful juicy fruits and round tannin with a pleasant bite. Really nice wine. Young maturity stage now and definitely still very ok in 2018.

  • 2010 Château Marsau 86 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Francs Côtes de Bordeaux

Creamy bouquet with dark forest fruits, some spiciness and some pleasant vanilla. On the palate juicy dark berry fruits, some bell pepper, good acidity and firm and sticky tannin. Not really exclusive, but certainly a very ok wine with a future at least until 2018+ and it will probably improve a bit over the next few years. 86+

  • 2004 Château Batailley 91 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Beautiful and a bit rustic bouquet with creamy dark forest fruits, sweet spices and a bit of smoky oak. Same on the palate, some chocolate, minerals and ink as well. Firm and good acidity and round tannin with still a good bite. The wine still has a future of several years. Until 2018 will be no problem.

  • 2006 Clos de l'Oratoire 92 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Beautiful bouquet with ripe dark berry fruits and well dosed smoky oak. On the palate dark as well as red berry fruits; very juicy wine. Good acidity and tannin. Still early maturity stage with still plenty of future. Next bottle around 2018+.

  • 1999 Château Cos d'Estournel 90 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe

Notes are completely blind. In the bouquet barnyard, red and black berry fruits, coffee, sweet spices and toasted oak. On the palate still juicy fruits, light to medium bodied with exclusive impressions, good acidity and melted tannin. Completely ready but still a light and pleasant bite in the tannin. Still a nice and exclusive wine, but the fruits can hardly(or just?) handle the toast. Not extremely impressed, but I like the wine. Ready now and don’t wait too long…

  • 1997 Spring Mountain Vineyard Napa Valley Red Wine 91 Points

USA, California, Napa Valley, Spring Mountain District

In the bouquet rustic and barnyard impressions as well as good and ripe dark berry fruits. On the palate concentrated dark fruit juice, a bit rustic as well, beautiful balance between acidity and sweetness, a bit creamy and also earth and some eucalyptus. Clearly new world style, but really lovely and completely ready now.

Beautiful and floral bouquet with dark berry fruits, sweet spices and a beautiful dose of oak. Same o0n the palate with some cocoa, coffee, powdery tannin, a touch of sweetness, but also good acidity. Round tannin. A lovely wine. Ready now and the next 2 – 3+ years.

  • 2009 Kanonkop Paul Sauer 90 Points

South Africa, Coastal Region, Stellenbosch, Simonsberg-Stellenbosch

Tasted completely blind. In the bouquet red fruits, some coffee and toasted oak. On the palate juicy red as well as dark berry fruits, good acidity and tannin, but still a bit too young and not really showing what it has in store. For tonight just 90+, but with some 3+ years of ageing it might score a bit higher.

  • 1998 Certan-Giraud 90 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

  • 1998 Château Prieuré-Lichine

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

In the bouquet a tertiary wine with tea, coffee and barnyard. On the palate also quite mature, but still juicy with sweet spices and autumn forest. A big wine, but past its prime. I see there are recent and quite high scores in Cellartracker. That is nice and I don’t know the history of the bottle we had tonight. No score from me.

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

In the bouquet red and dark fruits as well as some bell pepper. On the palate juicy fruits, sweet spices and some coffee. Good acidity and tannin with still some bite. No problem cellaring this for another 3 – 5 years. It might even improve a bit over the next two years.

  • 2003 Château Pape Clément

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

I don't know the history of this bottle, but it was much more mature than it should be. I made just a few notes. In the mature bouquet mainly toast and coffee and also some dark fruits. On the palate still juicy fruits and good acidity, but also a lot of coffee and cocoa. Soft tannin. Still a lovely wine which scores around 90 - 91, but I will not enter the score.

Very mature bouquet with old apricots. On the palate caramel, butterscotch and polishing wax. Very mature impressions as well. Still a pleasure though. No score.
